live crawfish on tipups?
« on: Dec 10, 2008, 07:06 PM »
Checked my minnow trap today and along with a doz chubs were 2 pretty nice sized crawfish. Has anyone ever tried them on tip-ups for bass?

I know they work in open water, just curious how they would work in hard water?

use the tails for perch...tails work well for perch around here in the fall and winter..usually cant find them in the winter unless you froze some from openwater season.

crayfish are like fish candy, let them big ones go or make some gumbo ;D try catching some smaller ones and using them for bait.

if you just want to catch some crayfish instead of minnows try baloney or pretty much any kinda meat or fish.

I hear the crayfish really fancy cut up horn pout.  I see them attack hornpouts in my traps so I'd imagine they would love an easy catfish mean.

Be carefull many areas it's illegal to use live crayfish. I know the Rusty crayfish is the big problem child. I guess DNR figures most wouldn't know the difference, myself included. Check your regs before you use them.

Smallmouths can be hard to find in the winter. Those mudbugs may just do the trick. Make them look a little more vulnerable by taking the claws off first. ;)

I found a little one in a bait trap last year and tried it out. I did get a flag, but lost the fish and the crayfish. so something hit it..... but what? perhaps a scuba diving redneck looking for mid winter gumbo, or a bucketmouth that got away..... only god will know, but I'll be sure to ask him when I get there!
