Interior snow machine trip to a remote lake?
« on: Dec 05, 2008, 12:47 PM »
I've finally got a reliable snow machine and a cargo sled, so I'm anxious to make a winter trip to fish a remote lake. Maybe Volkmar, George or Koole.

But none of my pals are really interested in doing a trip like this, so I'm reaching out to my fellow diehard fishermen here on the 'shanty.

Anyone interested in planning a trip?

I've got a quick fish III with a good heater and can borrow an auger - basically almost everything needed for a day trip besides your sled and personal/fishing gear. What I don't have is a snow machine trailer so hopefully you have one with an empty slot.

If anyone had an arctic oven and wanted to make it an overnight that would be even better - a little winter camping and fishing sounds like a great time to me (again my friends think I'm nuts!)

Also - does anyone have any reports on ice conditions out there? I know you need to cross the goodpaster to get to volkmar and cross the tanana to get to koole - I think there is a river crossing to george as well. Any reports on whether those routes are accessible now or not would be great as well.

Thanks

This reads like a dating ad to me.....I better look at having this removed....:roflmao:

I'm in not sure when I can do it? Give me some dates because I got a cow permit for the area out by Koole and know some people with a cabin out there and I could possibly get my hands on an oven. So it could turn into a triple dipper ???

um... ::)...nope no dating ad...wife would probably get mad at me! And I could think of better places to look too - sorry fellas!!

Nope - nothing picked out on a calendar yet, not even a month. First it depends on if the access routes are passable yet or not and from there just throw darts at the calendar. Weekend or Monday trip for me.

As for your cow permit - I don't know if you want to try to do to much extra stuff besides getting your moose on that trip! However, if you need someone to go with you, try and give me some lead time and I might be able to tag along to help you. More hands and sleds are a good thing when busting up and hauling a moose!

Id definitely be interested...just have to get a sled bought.  I've decided that I WILL own one by January since that's when company bonuses come out, just have to keep the wife out of it first.  I don't know about the trailer though, I might be able to borrow one from work.  I've always wanted to try a remote lake and overnight trip.  Most of the guys I know are also a bunch of sallys that I doubt would go. I'll keep you updated.

good for you bullhead!

Keep in on this thread - as busy as this month is, I'm sure this trip won't happen until 09!

I got a buddy, pretty much family who says I can use one of his Arctic Ovens anytime I need one. Plus I also have a 10x12 10oz wall tent to tag along for a cook tent just don't have the poles so we would need to find a few trees or cut poles.

Poles are easy.  My parents picked me up an old Cabela's ice shack on a yard sale when I was in college for $5.  The kicker was it didn't have all the poles that were needed to set it up.  I used some conduit and stuck some copper tubing down it to make slip-over fittings that made it collapseable.  It worked for 5 years until the canvas on the shack looked like swiss cheese, and the plywood was so rotted you could nearly see through it.  I'd imagine that you could probably try the same conduit and copper tubing trick for your tent.

This time of year always seems to drive me nuts - I want to get out and do so much, but you can only steal so much time away from the family to start with...throw the busy holiday season on top of that along with some shopping and parties and bang - it's 2009, 30 below, and you haven't been out nearly as much as you'd like!

Hopefully we can put something together for a ride-in trip sometime, day trip or otherwise.
