Trip suggestions?
« on: Dec 03, 2008, 02:22 AM »
 hello everyone,

Im looking to take short vacation somewhere within driving distance(so NY, preferably 1000 islands region). Looking for a place to stay, like a cabin maybe, near a good place to ice fish. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestion? I plan on going in early january. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated..

thanks

I usually go up to the Adorandac Mountains and stay up in Speculator, NY for few days,  when there is no ice in NJ.  You can hit like 10-15  nice lakes within a short driving distance from there,  it's in the middle of nowhere.  There is a nice motel on the left side before the main intersection.  I paid like 60-70 bucks per night 2 years ago,   pretty clean too. You might want to call ahead anywere you go becaue motels up there fillup on the week ends with the snow mobiling crowd.  It's their main business up there in the winter. Or you can go up to Lake George and stay up there,  but that's a lot more crowded  and more fishing pressure. And Lake George takes longer to lock up as well.

Moose, Jig has some great suggestions.  You might also try Saratoga or Sacandaga, about a 1/2 hour and 1 hour north of Albany.  But if I was you, I hit Champlain.  You can get to Ticonderoga in 4 1/2 hours from me, I live in western Morris County.  But, if you want to go a bit farther, I'd hit Vermont, on North Hero.  Stay at Holiday Harbor.

Any ice at this time is nice ice.
No, it's your turn!
