How to glue a tarp?
« on: Jan 01, 2004, 10:25 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has ever had any success in gluing a poly tarp (the blue kind you get at WalMart,etc.).
I have tried crazy glue, vinyl glue, hot glue, etc. and nothing sticks to it.

I am trying to hem a cut tarp so the edges won't fray and I'm looking for suggestions.

Thanks alot

YB

Have you tried epoxy? A "pastic weld" epoxy will stick to almost anything.

The only thing I have found that works is Shoe Goo.  Any adhesive that can take bending or folding will probably work, but shoe goo is the stuff I use on my portable shanty made of tarp.  Did you try patching the hole with another piece of tarp or tarp patch?  If not, try to overlap the frayed area with the patch and use some goo.  Good luck!

They sell a tape for poly tarps that might work.

I never have glued a tarp but I know a soldering gun will cut it the best and it will melt the cut edges

From experience, the best stuff is the black urethane goop used for sealing windshields in cars, you can get similar stuff at building supply stores wherre it is used for installing laminates on counter tops.  Works well but it is a good idea to scuff up the part of the plastic window to be glued with a bit of sandpaper.   It stays flexible in the cold and lasts forever.
