What makes you so smart?
« on: Nov 07, 2008, 03:11 PM »
Ok.  I am really happy to have found this site.  Ice fishing is just the bees knees. ;)
I typically keep this info to myself, but this forum seems to be a good place to expose the secrets of ice fishing ingenuity.

So, Question.

What have you done or created for you shanty that made you feel like a genius when it came to mind.

What design or idea did you have?  What problem did it solve?  How did you accomplish it?

When you got it done you said to yourself.  "Wow! I am the smartest guy on the planet!"

It can be small like a something to hang you jigs from or something large like a folding 20'x30' hardside, insulated, 150lb total weight, portable shanty, with tank tracks and a cummins turbo diesel?
(I'm embellishing a little bit there) :P

I have done a couple of things that I'm proud of.

What have you got? :)

Once I get my normal computer back I will post pics of a few.

PS.  This thread would be great with pics if you have 'em.

Not my house, but.
About ten years ago I saw a 4x6 shanty.  It had a small 2cycle engine mounted in the rear opposite the front door.  it was connected to a custom axle that was connected to custom made tank style tracks.  Car rims were used to rotate and support the track.  It had hand made rubber and wood tracks.  You stood in the front door and used hand brake levers next to you to steer left or right.

I still want to make one of my own.  so awesome...

I had the can holders that you hang from your pickup door modified and screwed to each side of my fish trap 2 but one broke off :(not my fishing side though). I made a rod holder that swivels out and put that on. And last season I put a wooden center console from a mini van(6x8x14")right down center. 2 beer holders and an ashtray. I hate dumping beers in the shanty and it happens too often, that and the waxies.
Pics to come.

I have no pics but when I was a little shaver my uncle had and old longtrack snowmobile, he took off the seat, windshield, front cover, skis & steering from the machine and built into the back of the shack and put the skis and steering on the front of the shack...start the machine, jump in and by the door there was a handle with throttle that you turned for steering....slick as heck...could move around all day looking for fish in it...I think it was like 8X10...was great until it went through the ice a few years after it was built...

Thats probably not a bad idea to use the engine from Jenn's car, some of us know how she drives, especially in winter.  See ditch , hit brakes and slide off road INTO ditch.  OR she sees a No Passing sign, figures she can't pass someone on the street, so goes around other side of sign and tries passing by using ditch to pass in.
 8) ;D
