Trail cameras

What is the best trail camera to buy for the buck. I want it to use when I set my bait traps so I have proof to cut off their fingers. 8)

Using a trail camera to do covert surveillance is tricky.  Most cameras could be easily disabled or destroyed if the culprit wanted to first prevent any evidence being left behind.   Mounting the camera to take pictures and not be noticed by people is tough, and that is what would be required.  To get a camera to take decent pictures and be totally automatic, it will not be cheap.  You can get locks/mounting boxes etc to help prevent your camera from walking away, but again, a big rock or a bullet will permanently disable the unit.

If all you are planning is trying to get a picture of a license plate, that may help you get an idea who it is, but it probably won't be enough proof that the owner of the vehicle did anything (unless you can somehow get pictures of that too).

There are some other devices than can record the time at which someone comes/goes.  That might be helpful for setting a bait stealer trap along with your fish bait trap.

Just be careful.

I remember when you could get a car alarm that would page the owner.  Problem was too many potential victims were confronting would be car thieves, and one of those folks wound up getting hurt, and it usually wasn't the thief....

Moultree sells a good digital for a 100 bucks or less. I have been getting some really good deer pictures with it. As far as people stealing traps we bait in ponds or streams big enough to use canoes. Our traps are as big as lobster traps and with luck we have never lost one yet.  We use fairly small buoys. Also we never trap in til the water cools down so we do not get fungi sh. Good luck

As Mainedog said hiding a trail cam to catch thieves can be tricky. If they see that then you can be sure they will bust it. The only way I could think of doing it is have it concealed in a bird house. Make the openings where the motion sensor is as well as camera lens. Put about 8 - 10 feet up in tree and angled down. I would also put a couple other bird houses out (with no camera in) that look similar but have them a little lower than the camera one. Of course you would need the No Flash models because if they see a flash then they are going to climb anything to wreck your camera. You would also have to make an anchor point in tree and it would have to be concealed inside of bird house....easy enough to do with some woodworking skills.

When you get some fingers, make sure you save them for lake trout bait. They would work dandy on a big five of diamonds. ;D
