I just wish less fishing gear was made overseas and more/all of it was made here in the USA.  Just my $.02

Fishing buds that don't have nothing for equipment.
Fishing buds that won't shut up when you are trying to relax.
Idiots that bring an axe to go through 16 inches of ice instead of an auger.
People out here aren't to schmart when it comes to ice fishing.

Fishing buddies that depend on you to bring everything they need to have a good day of fishing.

You drill the holes, I will clean them out.    His traps go in the water first!
Do you have any hooks and leaders?         Sure, Terminator leaders and Gamma hooks, not a big deal!!!
Can I use your scoop, I forgot mine?         His holes are nice and clean, and I'm still cleaning mine!!!
How much bait did you bring?                   Pond Shiners and Fall Fish, that I spent the time to get!!!
Did you bring your heater?                       Thanks for the shanty and heater Honey!!! My friend is happy!!!
What are you cooking?                           I'm glad I got that Deer this year!!!
You got anything to drink?                      Dunks" coffee, and Ice Hole Schnapps!!!
I'm glad we took your truck.                    No I don't have any money for GAS!!!

Needless to say, I only fish with him when my real friends can't go. They always pitch in and make for a great day on the ice.

I'm sure you all know someone like this. I don't mind sometimes because everyone should get a chance at a hassle free day of fishing.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

10 inch holes and unmarked 10 inch holes . Do not see a need for holes that large and dangerous for the young ones. How would you like that on your conscience. Seen a Quad hit a hole so hard his hut came uncoupled

of course no one would ever want to hear about a child falling through an ice hole, but it is icefishing.  your going to have to expect holes, and some fish just arent going to come through the smaller size hole.  if you bring children,  its your responsibility to watch them closely.       anyway, my petpeeves are snowmobiles that go too fast, too close to people fishing, when they have the whole lake to use plus all the trails around the lake and through town,  and also dave genz.  hes on every magazine and tv show about ice fishing.  you dont need all the expensive new stuff to catch fish especially bluegill,  hes not the best and he doesnt know anything that anybody else wouldnt know after spending the same amount of time on the ice/ talking to others/ reading on your own.  Since everyone has flashers now I dont know why the fishing media wont cover other people and what theyre doing.  what a waste.

You apparently don't know Dave Genz and haven't sat in on any of his clinics .
He's out there to pass on the sport to those who have questions and share the new technology .
You're rite that if you put some time in on the ice you too can learn what he knows , but there are more and more new people enjoying the sport that simply haven't had the kind of time some of us have had to learn the finer points of the sport .
You're also rite with the 10" hole issue that seems to pop up every year .
Unfortunately part of ice fishing safety is watching for hazards like 10"holes and that is the individual responsibility of the fisherman .

no, i dont personally know dave and im sure there are a lot of people who have joined the sport becaause they saw him on tv.  but what about the thousands of people just like dave, who do it a little different but just as effective if not more.  I dont see any of their names on portable shacks or vexilars.   I dont have a problem with dave personally,  hes probably a nice guy, sure hes trying to help others learn about ice fishing but hes also trying to sell them things. I think fishing shows and magazines should do more to seek out new people like guides or just people with alot of experience, which some of them do.  How many years has it been the same guy, catching the same species of fish, the same way? Have you ever seen three different fishing shows in the same morning with the same guest?  I have.
maybe the problem is just the inability of the media.

Dave is heavily involved with every aspect of the sport , he does hook rookies up with people who are good fisherman and he's involved with Kid's clinics to teach the youth about the finer points of the sport .
Along the way he's picked up sponsors that help him get the word out about the sport , if it means product endorsements for him why not take it so he can enjoy the sport like the rest of us and be able to teach what he knows to people that are new to the sport or haven't heard about certain techniques .
You would be amazed at how much time he puts into ice fishing education and puts his passion for the sport on hold to do so . Believe me it's not all media glory and free supplies , he is on the road countless hours and doing in store demonstrations and tutorials as well as on ice demonstrations . All of which takes time from his personal ice fishing .
Are there others out there that have the same abilities as he does ? Sure  , I can name a few myself but how many do you see doing all of the above , a small handfull and that's why you hear his name more often than others . As far as him trying to sell them things , again you're rite but who better to sell them things , I would rather it be Dave than a part time high school kid that couldn't hold a candle to what Dave can teach you by first hand use and experience .
I don't think it's the lack of media , I think it's the lack of people willing or able to invest the kind of time he does .

you must own stock in those companies.  we both know there is no lack of people willing to do what genz does, but most people have the 9-5 to deal with. im sure having a sponsor isnt a requirement to be a guest on a show or to be interviewed in a magazine. whats wrong  with a little variety and why do you insist on the same thing every year?

Dave Genz is he reason we have fish traps, sure somebody else could have came up with the idea eventually but they didnt do it first. He has done more to make icefishing popular than any other fisherman has. FWIW, Im jelouse too,but Im not gonna dog him for "Living the dream"

Hats off to guys like Dave,Bro, and others who promote our sport. Sure they get things from there sponors, but put yourself in there boots. Image being away from home, living out of a suite case just to spread the word about ice fishing. There not celebertys only guys like us know who they are,so I dont think its a ego thing. I just wonder how much these guys enjoy the time out now compared to when they didnt do it all the time. I know I look forward to get out for fun, but I dont think I could do it for a living.

It's not a matter of waving any ones flag , you find someone with his qualifications that's willing to give up the kind of time he does and let the networks know and I'm sure some kind of deal could be made .
I have yet to see him in an ice fishing show only advertisements . I have only seen the Winkleman boy's doing shows , and oh by the way Dave Genz will make a guest appearance  in another show made by Adventure Media called " Ice Men " this winter It will air on the Sportsman Channel.

No stock in Clam Corp or any other company to do with Ice Fishing .

Mine is when someone borrows something ...you know like scoopers, chairs, poles,jigs,tip-ups,lanterns.etc and doesn't return or replace them. Or when someone borrows my auger hauls it half way accross the reservoir and then leaves it there for me to go get. OR I could go on and on. But the good by far outways the bad.. ;)

One of mine is when you catch a fish that you want a quick picture of so you can put him back and the stupid camera won't work because it's 10 below.
Another is the ice-weanie that builds up on the line while jigging.
Another is a barbed hook in a wool glove.

a couple of guys were peeving about gaffs being too large
get yourself a great big ol' hook- something with a gap of 1-1/4" or so, get rid of the barb and fasten it on a stick or tubing of some sort.
a small bolt through the eyelet, lash the shank to the stick for rigidity, make it whatever length you want, and bob's your uncle.

another peeve-

i don't like peolple who think it's all about them.
anybody who feels like they have more of a right to something, anything, than somebody else does just because they consider themselves to be a better person can get stuffed.

oh- and don't let me see someone bullying a weaker person...
grandpa told me-"never wrestle with a pig. you both get muddy and the pig likes it".

When braided or super lines spin on your spool (yes - I do know your supposed to use backing on them...I just forgot on some of mine).   That gave me fits for an entire trip one year until I realized what was going on.  Ice freezing up eye's is another...or on super cold nights...tip up line freezing to the ice..that really sucks.  Then there is a myriad of other things.

On the upside - no bugs, don't need ice, no sunburn....there are a lot of advantages to.

1) Mono line that is for ice fishing and it still coils up from the cold.
2) fused super line that should not hold water and freeze up but does.
3) shanty hold down screws that come with the shanty but wont hold it down on a calm day.
4) any gear that says it works and just does not!!!!

I hate having to find out the hard way that the manufacture lied in their advertising and on there packaging. The good news is there is Iceshanty so I can learn from the mistakes of others and not buy all that junk on my own.

my only pet peeve is when the ice builds up on your eyes of your jigging rods.

That's another one for me...I will purchasing a couple of new rods this year I hope will help to eliminate that problem. Nothing worse that jigging walleyes with a huge ice ball forming at the tip and guides :woot: One good hook-set and pop in the freezing cold, there she goes.
