First perch of the season
« on: Dec 21, 2013, 10:45 AM »
Went out this morning with my father.  Table 2 water, so only 50 perch limit.  We started out on the ice right around 7:00 AM.  Both of us limited out by 8:05 AM.  4-5 inches of nice black ice.  Only about 3 to 4 inches of snow on top.  We each drilled one hole and within a minute we were on them and never had to move.  Threw back 4 or 5 that were just a little smaller than the ones we kept.  I did have a bullhead come up to my hole three times.  The last time I floated the maggot right in front of his mouth and he took it.  About a 13 inch bullhead.  He went back in as I really don't like the taste of them.

I was kind of upset that we were out for such a short time, as I was really looking forward to going, but shouldn't complain as there were times the perch had the bait before I even closed my bail.

at least someone was catching them.
out at hathaway's point with minnows and maggots and not even a bite.
marked some on the flasher, but nothing on the hook.
3" of ice under 3" of water and a crust.
fished out to 10FOW, about 100 yards from the launch.
no one out there but me most of the day.

We were the only ones out there this morning.  Fishing in about 7 feet of water.  I wasn't too big on the daily limit, as I have fished Champlain all my life, but 50 is about the perfect amount to clean and not have my back hurting when I'm done.  I don't fillet them, do it the way my grandfather taught me.  I brought home 179 a couple years ago and it took me 3 hours to clean them and then into the sink to scrap off the inside of the spine.  I should look into filleting them but just never got around to doing it.

We were planning on heading up to the islands, as we fish in a bay on the islands side of Savage Island, but we had heard the wind broke up the inland sea, so we tried the pond.
