« on: Mar 09, 2008, 08:31 PM »
Does anybody here use the vexilar mag shield? how usefull Is the magnification.  I Wanna get something to keep the snow off the screen, but can't justify spending 15 dollars on a plastic cap! Any alternatives?

Does anybody here have the battery indicators? How do these connect to the battery?

Thanks for the Help!!

UPDATED  Does anybody own the flex light for the vex? how much battery does it suck up, and how durable/usefull is it?

I wonder if saran wrap would work? How durable are those shields?

I bet the battery indicator comes in handy too

I use the mag shield, it works great, keeps all the snow and water out of the funnel area and makes it easier to clean off and easier to see for sure. The battery indicators just slide on the battery terminals with a flat blade female connector, I just use mine to check the status on my back up batteries, I charge my battery on the unit after everytime out to make sure they are charged for the next time out. These batteries dont have a memory so you should charge them after every use. I would recommend the 9 Amp battery over the 7 Amp, works much better! Hope this helps, good luck

A couple of my buddies simply cut out one end of  a coffe can and use that as a shield/sunscreen. Works/fits great. ;D

Battery indicator? Yeah, kinda cool looking that's all. Took mine off to modify the wiring so I can hook it up to the sled. Just charge it every couple trips and you will be fine. Those batteries last a long time. I have gone 3 days without charging mine. If anyone gets thier hands on a screen cap let me know. Hate how it fills with snow or rain.
Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

saran works but thicker clear vinyl from the craft store works best.  They sell it by the yard and it also makes great shanty windows.

Bought the magnifier many moons ago, picked it up at a sports show well worth it, thick plastic, works great for keeping snow and rain out. for a sun screen around it I use black plastic around the screen tied with a tie wrap and it works very good.

I don't care for the magnification and wish they had the shield w/o it. I use the shield all the time for the protection.

For the mag shield Sportsmans Warehouse sells them for $9.95 and I believe Sheels was $12.95 .
I bought an S cable when I first bought my Vex and have never used it.  We've been fishing in about 5 FOW the past couple weeks and I can't tell any change without it intalled ???

I could be wrong here but....I don't think you need an S cable on the FL-18 or 20....as they have a low power setting built into the unit. I think the S cable is for the FL-8. But I am far from an expert! LOL  Some one please correct me if I'm wrong. DD :-[

The S-cable reduces power by 50 percent. The only unit that needs an nS-cable is the FL-* because it doesnt have the low power setting

I put the screen cap on mine to keep snow off the face but it is really more useful in protecting the the screen from dirt and scratches. I don't use the battery indicator any more either. It wears down the battery between trips. It's just a gadget to waste your money on. I have never run my battery all the way down in over ten years with this thing.

i have had my shield for 3 years and it does have a couple scratches on it.  they are really durable, and will help keep snow and rain out of the screen area.  also magnifies really well.
when fisherman fish alone, do they really catch fish??

I can tell ya about the durability of the mag shield. This year while on our way out to a fishing hole we hit a few bumps and my buddy's father lost his grip on the Vex. It went skidding about 40 feet across the lake, tumbling all the way, before coming to a stop. Just one small scratch on the mag shield for the skid it made.
Needless to say, I took the Vex in my hands and rode the rest of the way out with it in my hands.
