trout help
« on: Mar 04, 2008, 05:04 PM »
i went fishing on sunday and set all of my traps just under the ice i thought there was salmon where i was fishing but someone told me just rainbow and maybe brown trout.  i had about ten flags and all the same thing a long run and i couldnt set the hook can anyone help me out with how you rig your tip ups for trout?  im using regular hooks with steel leaders i know i need smaller hooks but how small? and i use medium shiners should i go with small ones? any help would be much appreciated

first, if youre getting flags thats a start.

i personally dont find steel leaders necessary for trout.
i rig my tip ups with about 4 ft of 6# monofilament leader and a size 10 treble hook.
Also, it helps to put a split shot or two about 12 inches up to pin your bait at the desired depth.
for bait, emerald shiners work for me.

Icewarrior  loose the steel no need for it use small shiners 1 1/2 - 2 " Ippis has them  in Lynn # 4 or 6  gamakartsu  Octopus circle hook. Don't set the hook Just hand over hand the hook doe's the work. I used to live in Peabody were Are you fishing ART

getting flags is definitely a good start. stay at that depth and get rid of the steel leaders, that's too much junk, then tie on some 12lb. test mono and use a #8 hook on the end of that. it should work well for you, that's what i use and have no troubles . the baits are pretty good to, stick with the mediums. if your still having problems catching them, adjust your timing on setting the hook. see how that works, you should do well.

if you still get alot of chew and screws after doing what these guys say. put the hook thru the head and that should get you a good hook set
