Dead Minnow on Tip-Up
« on: Jan 24, 2008, 10:14 AM »
HI,guys, I am a newbie in icefishing and the tons of information here really helps me a lot .
How you you use dead minnows on tip-ups, and what's the best way of using them?
Sometimes after a day's fishing, some minnows on the tip-ups die before they get a hit and nowadays the minnows are outrageously expensively >:(.
Also, do you guys buy minnows just before each fishing trip or buy enough for several trips and keep them home?
Thank you!

    Welcome aboard cougar! :D

I put both on (live & dead), & seem to have the same results with both.  I usually hook them behind the Dorsal if they're dead, (sometimes I slit the belly a little & let some guts hang out for scent & display...) & I hook them in the mouth when alive. [ I also use a "stinger" hook/treble just behind the Dorsal) also pinch off part of the live fishs' tail to keep them looking wounded. If they die I generally save them for the next time. You can get minnows for free usually , if you ask the bait shop dealer, for the dead ones. (it doesn't hurt to buy something else tho. ;)  )  & yes I usually take them home, or pass them on tho my buddies who may be going out again b4 I do.

Good Luck!

You can try salting them (dead minnows)and storing them in a lg freezer bag.For the live, hook up an air pump and keep minnows in a 5gal. or aquarium and keep the water fresh and keep them on the cool side.
