Jigs or hardware for Grayling?
« on: Feb 28, 2008, 11:14 AM »
What styles/sizes of jigs are common for picking up grayling thru the ice? always used corn when i was a kid but i'm not sure if its legal to use on one of the lakes i plan on fishing, is corn considered artifical? either way, are their jigs that work well for grayling?

I have only fished for grayling a couple times and picked them up using small Gitzit micro jigs tipped with one wax worm.  They do give up a pretty good fight through the ice! ;)

Where at BD - on the river or in a lake? I guess I haven't ventured out enough since I've never caught a grayling through the ice. Good - there's one more thing to plan to do sometime!

I did real well on a small body of water on the AF base back when stocking grayling in large numbers was "hip."  I know you can get them in the river, and I think it's an upcoming challenge to catch some nice grayling, (16"+), out of the Tanana or Chena!  Can't imagine a fish that size on an ultralight set up on the river... Kick in the pants!

sure would be! I caught some decent grayling on the salcha while moose hunting this year (no pike though :( oh and no moose either for that matter!)

as was mentioned in the hatchery thread it would be nice if grayling stocking is coming back

The only place that I have caught them through the ice is at Birch Lake.

It was a couple of years ago and they were in front of the houses to the right at the highway pulloff.  Last year I saw one caught at breakup at that huge hole that was there at the pulloff.

Sorry about that.  I caught them on little ice jigs tipped with shrimp or eggs while I was fishing for rainbows.
