How do they get a vehicle out of the ice
« on: Jan 15, 2004, 09:31 PM »
Has anybody seen how they get a vehicle out from under the ice once it has fallen through? Better yet has anybody got some pictures of it

Beleive this one if you will. I had spent a couple of nights out on our local reservior. There was 18" of ice. I had drove my wheeler all over the lake at night looking for fish and coyotes. A couple friends of mine said they would come visit me. The next day, Non icer's.  They drove there blazer across the lake and went through a pressure ridge, Both made one just barely they about froze before they found shelter.

But how they rasied that outfit in the spring was they loaded a generator and air compresser in a boat. had a skin diver go down with big tractor tire tubes, put them in the vehicle had a air hose that was long enough to reach the vehicle, this was in 35' of water. filled up the tubes with air the vehicle floated to the surface they tied a tow rope to it drug it to shore, and had a tow truck drag it out.

Also the old boy cleaned that blazer up same engine and drove it a couple more years.

I have also seen them take 4 55gal drums with the lids cut off down to a sunken vehicle tie them off to each four corners upside down take an air hose displace the water in the drums with air and float it that way. this is a little more tricky because you have to make sure each drum is equal with air. I don't have pic's that was in the day when I never had a cramera with. I now carry one most of the time.

I was in Minneapolis about 15yrs ago, & saw on the news that something like 13 vehicles went into a lake one night, all along the same crack.  Luckily everybody survived.  They were talking about the fines & the expense of having a vehicle hauled out.

It was something like $500/day fine, & several-thousand-dollars to get divers & a rig.  Then your insurance wouldn't cover it.  Yeouch!

I guess you need to be really rich to live in MN!

well thats nice much  better on your vehicle than this about 10 years ago i was bass fishing on a local pond when the buzz came down the grapevine that a van had gone through the ice about 150' from shore in about 15' of water.they cut a huge hole in the ice  near the boat landing  and of course there was an even bigger opening where the van went through!!then a diver went down 3 times each time hooking a cable from the van to a large towtruck from a local trucking outfit.3 seperate towtrucks simultaneously dragged this poor van across the lake bottom and it seems they were a little off when they estimated where the van would come through the ice it popped up about 10 feet too soon right through the ice !! it looked like it had been in a 10 car pile up and rolled over about 90 times i honestly dont think it was fixable

A buddy of mine put his pick-up through a couple years ago.  Here in WI you've got a limited time to get it out before the DNR starts fining you by the day.  He hired a company that came out and got it out.  They had this thing that could best be described as a bridge on skis.  They used chain saws to cut the hole bigger after setting the bridge up over the original hole.  Then they sent divers down with cables that hooked to winches on top of the bridge.  Then they hauled the truck up until it was suspended above the water and pulled the bridge off the hole and lowered the truck onto hard ice.  Pretty neat thing to see.  Probably wouldn't have been if it was my truck though.

Saw them do it up un Northern NY a few years back.  Was simmalar to the way Kerocounty described it exept they built an A-frame structure out of heavy timbers over the hole and winched the truck straight up and out, then pulled it away from the hole as they let the winch down.  In NY you get fined by the day untill you get the vehicle out.  (I think I heard it was $500 per day?)

I was out fishing yesterday and was talking with a fellow and he told me that a truck went though on long lake here in Saskatchewan last week and they were using a large trenching machine to trench from were truck went down to the shoreline about 600 yards from shore then divers go down and attach a cable from the tow truck and pull it along the trench to were they can cut a large hole in the shoreline a pull out the truck some times they need to drop power poles from the ice to the bottom of the lake and skid the truck up the poles and back on the ice . So I guess some times all you have to do is ask around thanks guys

I shot a whole roll of film of a recovery at Pelican Pte. Sk. about 6 or 7 years ago.  A half ton went in on a heave about 150 yds out in 14 or so feet of water   (and yes, he was warned!) and they sent a diver in to hook up.  Because the front end was buried in muck up to the headlights the diver hooked up to the back end ($1000 and they don't dig it out!).  Then they cut a slot with chainsaws and winched it in with a tow truck, then 2 tow trucks...because they flipped it over and pulled it upside down and backwards over the rocks.  Then they cut the big hole in about 8 ft of water, put in the poles and dragged the sorry mess out.  I think if it hadn't been insured, the way to go would of been to get the diver to dig out the front end a bit and not destroy the truck because my premiums are high enough already.  I never scanned those, but I got double prints because the tow-truck guy wanted some, but he never came for them once he saw how the job turned out.  I think he's a lttle embarrased.  I'l scan some of those and post them when I get access to the scanner and  graphic converter prgm again.

There was a great program on Discovery Channel about the truck route across Great Slave Lake. They were saying that it wasnt "if" but "when" a truck would go through the ice. They showed how they went about retrieving them. Anyone else catch this program, it was on about a week ago?

I saw the show .they show a double trailor of deisel fuel, 10,000 gallons go though. luckly no holes in the tanker and deisel is lighter so it floats.  show a special crain come pick it up , after they  cut hole in the ice and put explosives to loosen the truck from the ice..,,,,, not in my lifetime.              toph2o

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an  well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, A fishing pole in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming \"WOO HOO, what a ride!

last year, saw a new dodge truck go 1/2 way in, guy drove right up and along side a pressure crack 4ft high,  2 tow trucks couldn't get him out pulled off the front bumper, a guy in a superduty yanked him out, lucky, water 100ft deep at that spot.  i went fishing there today, no pressure cracks, 24" ice, no fish, oh well better luck next time, by the way whats the best way to catch lakers?  i must be doing something wrong!! :o

it depends on where the vehical whent in. my cousin has pulled a car out of a bay when it whent through. they used an escevator and lifted it right out. the car was only a few feet from the marina or else the would need to do something different.

We watched as divers went down and latched onto a car and a tow truck with a boom hauled it up out of the water. There is no mercy when they do that work. I think the recovery does more damage than the accident.

In michigan (depending on you area) they have specific equipment to haul a waterlogged vehicle out.  The fees to get it out are outragious and the fee's from the D.N.R. to the only don't help much.  The also charge by day.  I believe $1200 after a certain date.

Yeah, I believe that picture was taken in Minnesota at a WSA oval racing event.  I'm sorry, but even if there is a ton of ice you don't park haulers with 20-40' trailers right beside each other on the ice.  I can't remember the estimated damage, but it was crazy.  Not a good deal at all.

I kinda remember that, I think it was a race on Mille Lacs. I remember seeing it on the news, they had quite a mess on their hands for a while, good thing they weren't out a mile or 5.  :o
That would have been VERY UGLY in 30 FOW.
