I know here in Utah they have to be registered.  If you are using it on the ice for sure.  Nothing different except hard water and soft water.  Just my .02 Here they have even restricted some lakes from using a sled.  It's screwy. :icefish:

here is some info for you.

I pulled into Deer Creek island marina 7:30 am sunday the 27th to fish with my two teenage boys. As I drove around to the boat ramp where I planned to unload my four wheeler. A state park ranger was talking to a feller that was unloading two snowmobiles as I got closer she stoped me, then proceeded to tell me that OHV'S were not allowed on there lake. I asked who's lake? she laughed. I asked why they wasn't allowing OHV'S on the ice and she couldn't answer me she said that they just decided that they wasn't allowing them on the ice any more and that it is left to there discretion. I then told her to refund my parking fee and that i was leaving, when she left to retrieve my pay envelope the feller that was unloading his snowmobiles come over to my truck and he told me that he was there saturday and he had his machines on the ice along with about a dozen or so others. what a bunch of B.S. you know its hard enough to keep teenagers intrested in the outdoors and keeping them out of trouble and then some dumb A has to pull this kind of crap. So maybe Im wrong but

Not unless you are on a VAST (or local club) trail...

I didn't make the laws...

With a Snowmobile, if you are on your own land or someone elses with written permission, you do not need to register...Anywhere else you are 'supposed' to register and have a VAST sticker...

I didn't even mention the Insurance...

The reason for no VAST sticker on a 4 wheeler I think is because they are not allowed on the trails.BB

You don't need a Vast sticker for a wheeler, but it DOES need to be registered to go on the water. Vt. waterways are considered to be roads. Just a note, you can get pulled over for DUI on a wheeler on the lake and it will be handled the same way as DUI on the road. Not to say that you do or would DUI,
just thought folks should know.

One more thing to keep in mind  in VT a frozen lake is considered a public highway and the maximum speed limit is 50 m.p.h. This last weekend saw guys screaming though tip ups at what must have been 65+.  Talk about annoying.

I hate that, some people have no respect or understanding of the disturbance they cause.  Is a little common courtesy too much to ask for...there’s the whole lake, do they really have to be that close?

That's good to know. I have a sled and the only reason I've registered it the last 2-3 years is to go fishing. Coincidentally I always get a TMA just in case I want to go riding.(I didn't realize the TMA was required for the ice) Its a real waste of money cause I've only put about 40 miles on it this year.  The 4-wheeler is better, cheaper to run and easier to load and unload.  I just wish I had about $3000 to play with cause I would get a set of those tracks.

Dont forget insurance.

This whole having to have VAST on the ice really burns my A**, Regerstraion and insurance i can understand. but VAST?? if im not going to ride on the VAST trails why should i have to have VAST Membership? Im paying for a resourve im not going to use. If thats the case why isnt the state making snowmobliers who ride on the lakes while trail riding buy fishing license for riding on a body of water? its getting to the point where its not worth it. you have to pay insurance, registertaion,VAST and Local club membership. maybe its cheaper to just take the fine if you get caught.

The fine is pretty steep ,I was told it is $300, for not having a Vast sticker and $500. for uninsured. It cost me $85 for the club and TMA early sign up.I don't use the trails either but it would be my luck I would get caught everytime I went out.BB
