Congrats; You have been tearing up them big gills at the slough this year. Good job. When are you going again, can I follow? How long did it take to catch all them hogs?

I'd like to go again when work and weather permit.  Hopefully this week if the ice is still good.  I can PM you if I can swing going again this week.  I fished yesterday from about 8am until 3pm.  Got my limit within about 3 hours and just started fishing for fun and exchanging a few smaller ones for bigger ones after that.  Took some work again but got into some decent ones.

Not trying to be an arse but how do you do that without a live well??   how far do they swim after you put them back before they turn into window lickers??   just wondering??

nice mess anyways!

Hi Gang!
Just so you all know there is a twenty five fish limit on the slough.  I really don't see the need to take more than a few per guy anyway.  But to each his own.  I hope I don't hear anyone complain next year the big gills aren't there anymore.  I hope everyone releases some of the bigger ones back for breeding stock and small fish preditors.    Nice catch and tight lines

Roc,
Between the four of us, we brought home 35-37 gills in total.  I don't see how you can make a meal of any gills with a "couple" per person as you suggest.  I agree that we are our own police when it comes to preserving our resources but a few blue gills per person is really stretching it.  Ther are reasons behind the limits published by DNR biologists.  Gills and crappies are very prolific breeders and overtake lakes and ponds, hence the larger daily take limit where as limits on larger sportfish are kept at a minimum.
In the early 80's when there were no daily limits on gills, fishermen were taking gills out by the hundreds and the Slough continued to thrive.  Typically, I rarely fish for gills or crappies, only in the winter and almost always release all unless my buddies want some for a fish fry.
Just being a little defensive about my first picture posting.
Peace. ;D

No problem.  I make sure I throw one back that hasn't set too long if I do exchange one.  They are always lively and are able to swim back in the hole aggressively or I DO NOT throw any back or exchange any.  I only exchanged a couple and caught and released the rest.  As you can tell by the pic, the gills are varied in size and not all big.

tried not to be too critical, but i have seen guys sort out small ones like 7.5 inchers and they jet back down only to be seen 20 ft away an hour later  licking the btm of the ice on their side. :%$#!: :%$#!:

glad the lake has come back nicely for you guys!!

Unless laws have changed since the big drain, sorting  and upgrading your creel was illegal in Indiana last I heard.

A few years ago they changed the sorting rule. You can sort, but you have to release a live fish for the one you keep. May want to check the regs to be sure.

Hopefully this weather leaves some lakes locked up so you can get out before the season ends. :-\
