Oh Yeah, I forgot. Use Treble hooks on the quick strike rig.

Bear...just tried circle hooks for the first time this winter and had pretty good results. Circle hooks may not have the hooking percentage of trebles, but if you are planning to practice catch and release they are a good option.

Yeah, thats why I never liked circle hooks. Seemed I almost always would set the hook, which is a nono with them.
They pretty much have me convinced now that they are quality viable options for catch and release fisheries... if you plan on releasing 100% or most of your fish, they should be the go to option, but I still prefer trebels because I think they hook the fish a lot better. Just MO

Oh yeah... what I said about quick strike rigs, I'm sure would work if you replaced the trebels with circle hooks.

Tried circle hooks today trout fishing and hit every fish that put up a flag.  I've noticed that they tend to hook in the corner of the mouth better on fish with larger mouths..pike, muskie, bass, etc.

well... the pike schooled me with my quick strike rigs yesterday with trebels, I pulled it out of their mouths usually because they would never run and I couldn't get an angle. I believe I will try circle hooks my next outing for pike, and probably even try my next outing for lakers as well. Circle hooks seem to be getting a lot of praise so there must be a reason. I will definitely give them a better shot this year then I did last year wen I posted this thread. Thanks everyone!

I have been usung cirlcle/octopus hooks for 3 years now and I think I land more fishthem than with trebles.. Maybe its just me ??? I have found the best way to hook fish when using them is to gently put them brakes on the fish when it is still taking line out..  How you hook your bait makes a difference too.. With dead bait(smelt) I push the hook right through and then back again the oposite direction .. Live bait just below the skin in front of the dorsal fin.. I prefer circle hooks they don't get buried in the fishes throat and I think the flag to fish iced ration is better.. I used trbles for years and will never go back..

This is my second season with circle hooks and I'm sold on them now.
This afternoon, my sons & I fished a small pond near home. My traps/tip ups were rigged with circle hooks and the boys had the old standard Mustad bait holders.

We all caught a four or five (LM bass and pickerel) and NONE of mine had taken the hook deeper than the inside of the lip.  I also had zero missed fish.   I had to go to hemostats on three of their bass because they'd taken it down into the throat.  They also missed a few hookups on their traps.

I know it's not a statistically valid, blinded experiment - we had different anglers handling each trap and a sample set of 15 is not enough.  But my preliminary conclusion is - I'm going to rerig their traps with circle hooks before we head back out there next weekend !

Can't say enough about circle hooks. I've used quick strike, treble, octopus, and circle hooks. I haven't lost anything on a cirlce and once hooked it is very hard for them to throw the hook because of the location. It appears most people I've spoke with that have tried circle hooks have not gone back to anything else..

Circle hooks all the way! There are a few variations on the circles. Some are inline circles, offset, and octopus circle.I prefer the octopus with the turned back eye.The turned back eye angle pushes the hook into the fishes mouth when the brakes are put on the tipup.

when i get a hit on a circle hook I just take my time getting over to it, wait till they're through runnin and just pull em bak to the hole. the faster I get there the more fish I lose, the circles keep me from gut hooking everything so I can take my time. also keeps me from dropping my jigging pole on the ice to run for a flag. Ive lost acouple poles through the years because of that

well tommy I'll have to give that slow stroll to the hole a try i wouldn't want my jigging pole to be dragged through a hole never to be seen again that's a bummer

I went to circle hooks last year as an experiment & love 'em.  I've left all my traps rigged with circles.  Now I want to find some big enough for togue (lake trout).  Almost all the fish are hooked in the corner of the mouth and it makes for easier releases when I'm tossing a small one back.

Give it a try, I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Used them for the first time Saturday at Granby for lake trout using spawn sac, first couple hits were misses due to me wanting to set the hook. After letting the hook due it's job 100% hookup. I use them on open water all the time fishing for wiper and cats, love them no more swallowed hooks always in the corner of the mouth.

I use them and love them but i modify the setup a little bit.I use heritage traps so this is easy to do.Take a thin rubber band and loop it through itself around your line where you would normally mark your depth.Loop the other end over the star drag on the spool. When a fish hits the spool turns just enough to trip the flag as the rubber band straightens out, then the rubber band sets the circle hook,if it's a big fish the rubber band will then snap and the spool will turn freely,if it's a small fish it will look like it's bungy jumping off your trap.No more run and drops either.works great!
