flashers
« on: Jan 31, 2008, 08:04 PM »
I want to buy a vexilar flasher. I saw a good deal on a FL-8se with a dual frequency transducer 9/19. Is this a good unit for fishing lakes up from 5-60 feet? Is this unit good or is it worth spending more on the FL-12,FL-18,FL-20? Do these units have more bells and whistles that I don't need or are they notesly better units? What is the best single frequency for the depths I mentioned-9,12,19?

I was in the same boat......I went for the FL-12.  It has the flat face and that is a big plus...no place for the water or snow to gather.  Plus it was only $50 more than the FL-8.  Any way you go, you won't be upset.
I'm not getting skunked, I'm just eliminating water

i currently have the fl-8 with the dual beam transducer.  it is perfect for fishing 3 feet all the way down to 120 feet.  the 9 degree transducer will give you better target separation than the 19 degree.  i will usually use the 19 degree for fishing shallow water, less than 20 feet.  and will use the 9 degree for the deeper water.  keep in mind if you are fishing a pretty steep dropoff and it's only 12-15 feet you would want to use the 9 degree to take away more of your blind spot.  the fl-8 will do almost everything that the other flashers have.  fl-8 doesn't have the bottom lock or auto zoom feature, which isn't a necessity.  good luck, hope this helps in your flasher quest.
when fisherman fish alone, do they really catch fish??

fl-8se , keeps the weather off , don't get wrapped up in all of the fancy's .....save
the xtra $ for maggots & the oil people......

Same here, I got my FL-8se, and my first time out it snowed, So i bought a mag shield for $7, and fixed the problem. Love my vex, I wouldn't go fishing without it.

Vexilars are awesome but you might want to take a look at the Marcum VX-1. Its a great machine and costs less than a Fl-8. I've fished with my flasher in 65fow with no problems and the interference rejection works great too. just my opinion
