Sioux Narrows
« on: Dec 20, 2007, 10:34 AM »
I will be heading up to Sioux Narrows on the 29th for some fishing prior to the lake trout opener on the 1st.

How is the ice and the fishing going around Sioux Narrows?

We will be staying at Crystal Harbour. I will have the radio set to the Ice Shanty channel 7. Anyone around give me a shout and keep your ears on.

Got back yesterday. What a tremendous trip. The fishing was good, the snowmobiles ran great, the food was great, the weather cooperated, and the bed was warm.

We had two meals of fish. The owner of Crystal Harbour Resort in Sioux Narrows cooke one meal that we breaded for her when the cook was off for the New Years holiday and the cook made another meal when she returned. The first one was just Shore Lunch breading and it was fantastic. The cook did her magic with a wash of canned milk and egg followed by a breading of simply cornflake crumbs with no other seasoning added. It was buttery, flaky and crisp.

We brought back limits of lake trout, walleyes, perch, and crappies. We also got a couple of bonus whitefish.

I caught 7 species. Lake trout, walleye, sauger, perch, crappie, eelpout, and whitefish.

For a while it was a bit snowy:

Me with a stunted tail trout:

Me with a couple of buckets of Nestor Falls crappies:

Me on the Panther 700 with a walleye:

This was my second time up there for the trout opener. It is an amazing time. I think we put around 100 miles on the snow machines.

There is nothing better than the smile on a childs face when they see the fish come up through the hole.

Some of those slabs look like mules. They must average about 12-13''  ???

Hard_H20,

For someone who is geographically challenged in Canadian geography...where exactly is the Sioux Narrows? I consider a trip catching multiple like that a great success. It's kinda' like salt water fishing...you never know what you're going to catch. Great pics...well done!

I hope this link works:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=sioux+narrows+ontario&ie=UTF8&ll=48.523881,-94.96582&spn=5.188145,9.689941&z=7&om=1

It is about 2 hours NW of International Falls, MN

We did target species. At each spot we knew what we were after and what was going to bite. The only variables were the whitefish and the eelpout.

The trout were pursued with 3 and 4 inch white and pearl tube jigs. The whitefish also bit on those in the trout spots.

The walleyes and perch we chased with jigging spoons (I really like the Gapen Flicker). The eelpout was caught along with the walleye and perch.

For the crappies my b-i-l and I were using Custom Jigs and Spins Demons, Ratsos, and Shrimpos tipped with waxies. No bonus fish on the crappie spot.

We did catch some big crappies. We made the mistake of keeping some of the smaller ones initially. You can keep 15 per angler. The smaller ones came early and the bigger ones showed up later. We were in about 40 feet of water. It is hard to bring them up slow enough from the deeper water so that they will go back down if they are small.
