Kearney area Ice
« on: Dec 13, 2007, 11:40 PM »
CHecked the ice around the Kearney area today and it is pretty sketchy at best.  Cottonmill had about 3-4" by the boat ramp.   Only place I tried drilling there.  Tried one other place out by the interstate and it only had about 1-2".  Only drilled by the dock.  Looks like someone tried to get on it and fell through right next to the dock.  Be careful if you try any of these places this weekend and make sure you have you spikes around your neck to help you get out if you go thru!!!!!!!

Stopped by Yanney yesterday afternoon and saw a few holes by the dock and a couple by the bridge.  Looked to be about 3-4" but did not go out on it.

I drilled them holes by the dock and it wasn't even close to 3".  It looked to be less than 2".  That was on Thursday though.  It might be a little thicker now but not enough for me to try.  There was a couple holes already drilled there and that big hole on the east side of the dock looked like someone fell through.  There is no way I would get out there yet.  As much as I want to catch some gills, I don't want to get wet!

Was out today on Cottonmill and Yanney.  Ice is in pretty good shape.  Caught a ton of dinks and that was about it!  Going again tomorrow I think!

I was also on Yanney today...but I didn't catch a thing. Ice was in better shape then I expected(between 3-6 where I was at).

Walleye,

When were you at yanney...must of missed you, I was there about 2. I am planning on going out tomorrow, also. I will be in a white ford 4x4 and I have a quickfish II.

Hope to see you out there.  :icefish:

Hey jorg, how it goes?  Did all the catching at the mill today.  Only marked 1 fish on the vex today at Yanney and caught him, a 5" LMB.   I tried all the spots I got them last year and just wasn't anything there.  Going to Cottonmill in the morning, think I just missed the Northern bite today as I only had 2 flags go up .  Going to hit it early in the am.

Jorg, keep me updated on Sherman and when it's safe.  Talked to the bait shop there on the corner and he said there was guys on in #8 and by the dam!

That would be sweet.  I haven't hooked up with that big of slimmer through the ice since Pelican was in its hay day in the 80's.  Does that date me or what?

My sources say that the water is still very cloudy and the bite is a "little off."  In fact they said that they wouldn't waste their time at Sherman for a while.  We had real difficulty finding fish on Old Muddy this fall and maybe this is still carrying over into this early phase of icefishing.

Another source said that there has been a little walleye bite on the dam from about 4-8 pm.

good fishin'????

Been getting a ton of short gills and a few small crappie.  Did manage 1 small pike today.  It's still early in the game though, it'll only get better.

went out yesterday afternoon to cottonmill after the wind took a little bit of a chill pill.. caught a ton of small gills, a handfull of crappie, and a few largemouths, one was 4-5 lbs.

Ice is good in the middle of the lake (5-8) but i recommend extreme caution if anyone ventures north of the boat ramp. Talked to some guys that ventured up towards one of the fingers drilling/checking as they went and ran into some 2" stuff.. Be carfull fellas

Was out on Cottonmill about a half hour ago and had some great ice. 3-6 inches in most places. The far east end was still open by the dock because of the pump, but the area around the pier and west of it have some very good fishable ice. I agree with TMFLDM, dont go too far north of the boat ramp.

haha, went out to yaney today for about an hour. I drilled a TON of holes and never did mark one fish, drilled from the west side part, all the way to a line from the pier on the southside strait north, so in other words half the lake... water depths varied from 3 ft to 23ft... ice was from 3-7 inches...

then went to Ft. Kearney to test the ice. open water at the west end of every lake with 3-6 inches on the majority of the lakes. Did manage a few gillls and some lmb.. all in all a slow day.
