Nice one BI.  We have a heck of a smallmouth fishery in the Gorge, but I have no idea were they go in the winter.   Where do they go and how do you target them?  I would appreciate any thoughts on the topic.

Bigred1, Every winter i catch a few, but not many this size. I did catch one a couple of winters ago that was 18.5" my biggest through the ice. As you can see I was fishing in the rocks. It seems like you can catch just about a species in that rough structure. Northern,Cats,Crappies, eyes and sometimes i will pick up a smallie.
       I have noticed when I do catch one it has been in shallow water 8' to 16'. most of the time i will get  them jigging off the bottom about a foot or two but this one took a live minnow, a pretty big one. what had happened is my bait keep getting stuck on the bottom, i had it to close, so i moved my bait up about 10" off the bottom. I don't think SM are real bottom cruiser so i would stay up off the bottom a little.
     Fish places that are good in the summer, also pick the brains of the ice fisherman back east some of those guys only fish Bass they are real good at it. Good luck!

very nice there was a few smaller ones caught last weekend when i went but not that big we also got a few eyes and crappies got my first eye through the ice it was sweet a nice 2lber
