Replacing line on new tip-ups???
« on: Nov 29, 2007, 09:26 PM »
when i bought a couple of polar HT tip-ups i also bought some polar ice black braided line for backing rated at #20lb test, 100yds. but when i busted out the tip-ups to spool the line on i noticed there was already line on the spool. it looks similar to what i bought to spool up with. i've never had line already on the spool and was wondering if this was the same stuff (same company), or should i trash it and spool up the new stuff?

I would say yes, due to the fact that its usually crappy line pre-spooled on there. Just my opinion however..

Ive bought HT''s windlass tip up and it has this on it. To me it looks like suped up sewing thread. I leave it on my windlasses because it acts as a spool filler, i just blood knot or uni to uni and keep on wrappin. I wouldnt trust the stuff but you never know till you try. On top of the 100 yds on the spool (original) ive put about another hundred or so of 50 pound dacron and theres still lots of room on the spool. I left it on both my windlasses and it seems to be OK. Just rewrap it tightly and you will be good to go.

Gambooler,
Put on a pair of leather gloves and wrap the line around them and try to break it, or wrap it around something round and pull on it, see what the breaking point is, It should be plenty stout. Also try it with the line you bought. You will probably find out that the line that comes with the tip ups is just fine.  Tell us how the test comes out.

Depending on what your fishing for it's probrobly fine, but not enough, if its like the ones my son won at a derby last year.  Also make sure to pull all the line off and tie it to the spool, the ones he got last year only had a piece of tape holding the line to the spool  :o

I would get rid of that fat water absorbing line. I've switched out the line on my tip-ups to "tuff-line" 30# (6# mono. dia.). It seems to work well for me, especially when fishing deep water..
