moose season recap
« on: Oct 28, 2007, 10:42 AM »
1st hunt- A2
3 days and 32.5 hours in the woods = 5 moose sightings (all shootable) and 5 deer. 1 shot fired and a miss. 4 bulls and 1 cow. All 4 bulls were withing 40 yards. 3 were bedded.  They decided they did not care if they shot a moose.

2nd hunt- southern NH
4 days paid for moose hunting.
2 full days in the field. 3/4 of a day yesterday and 2 hours this morning = no moose, 5 deer, 1 bear, and a porcupine.  Clients stole from a local establishment, almost caused us to get kicked out of an area. Got p*#sed off and went home this morning.

First time I have ever run into "people who did not care to shoot a moose" and "problems with landowners!"

I am glad to be home!

The money was definately worth the hassle this year.  I can't believe how one of my groups acted and handled their firearms.  I was on my toes at all times!  This season has made me think hard about next season and the things that will be changed very soon.

if there's anything good about it, besides the money.......the moose will be bigger next season and hopefully you line up clients that are all about the hunt and not just the party  :-\

sorry to hear you had to deal with that.....better luck next time  ;)

ANSWER:  Wait until they get into the thickest crap and then pull the trigger with a magnum caliber and a very light bullet!

we had a guy we picked up in the dark off of a bear bait. he knew we were picking him up late. he got in the ext. cab truck and layed his rifle in the back seat of the truck. my buddy asked if it was unloaded. he said it was. we drove 100yrs. down the road and when we hit the first bump, bam! 300 win. mag thru the side of the truck! the guy was so scared to be out there he didnt unload his rifle! man did we get educated real quick!   should be illegal to hunt w/ anything less than a .243! a real hunter that gave a d**n about his game wouldnt even consider using that caliber! i shoot a 7mm mag. and dont consider it overkill. just insurance my game suffers as little as possible when i pull the trigger! 1 shot 1 kill!

A woman in one of the areas we were hunting this year shot a bull at 70 yards with a .44 mag!  1 shot.....1 kill!

When I shot my moose with my bow, I had my .44 Mag Contender on my side. My intentions were if a moose would not commit to under 50 yards, I would take him out to 80 yards with the T/C.  Opening day, I had a bull commit to a broadside shot at 58 yards and I poked him through the heart with a 125gr Muzzy.

nice, i don't have a contender, i have never been drawn for a moose but last time i went bear hunting i had a model 29 as backup to my mathew's, and i just changed to reaper's from thunder head fixed.

I can hold a 6 inch group off hand with my Contender in the .44 Mag.  It has a 14" barrel and a 2x scope!  It is quite heavy but fun to shoot.  I know have an Encore as well!

a .44mag has the down range energy to do the job on a moose out to 100yrs. but a 40grn .22?  coyote out to 200yrds maybe at the most.

.22mag, .22hornet reloaded or .222 reload sure, rimfire no way neither for an ethical kill i agree, but some reloads would do the job ;)

even then the .22cal. reloads dont have the downrange energy to do the job. my buddy shot a doe w/ a 22-250 at 100yrds. w/ 55 grn. speer soft point  reloads. made a perfect heart shot. the deer had to be shot again in the neck to finish it off. the bullet disintergrated just under the skin! never touched a vital! just tore up flesh outside the chest cavity. that bullet was moving almost 4000ft./sec.!  and that was just a 140lb. doe! maybe if you shot a moose between the eyes you could drop it w/ one shot but i wouldnt try it!

Maybe if you shot yourself in the foot with a 22 cal while driving a ten wheeler and caught the moose sleeping in middle of the road you could say you got him with that light load.

My friend's 12 year old son shot this moose in western Maine. Cant remember the exact spread but it was over 70". These pictures just dont do it justice.

haha I was talking to the taxidermist who did my buck a few years back, that he got a moose head from an out of stater who wanted a shoulder mount and just gave him the head like that in the back of the truck!  He was like "what the BLEEP do you want me to do with this?" and the people got pissed and said they would take their money/ bussiness somewhere else and he laughed and let them go down the driveway.. some people's kids let me tell ya

Don't know what he has planned, but I know he already regrets not getting a shoulder mount.

r u for real?...................... .... they kept the meat and nothing went to waste. A soulder mount of that size is very expensive, especialy for a 12 yo.
