« on: Dec 16, 2007, 04:19 PM »
How does evryone keep them?  In the fridge or what.  This is the first year I tried them and had a lot of luck today with them,  just dont want to keep having to buy more everytime I go.

The fridge should be fine; they're just colored spikes (fly larva) as far as I know. You might want to hide them if you're married. Some women just don't like maggots in the food area.

I usually buy 2,000 at a time and that will last me the season. I use two larger size freezer bags and put 1,000 spikes in cach bag. I get some fine pine shavings and change the bedding and pick out the dead spikes a couple times a week, time consuming but a must. You will want to keep them in the fridge and fairly cold around 34-36 deg F. Spikes are supposed to keep best in a sealed plastic bag because it limits the amount of air they get, thats what it said on the paper from Vados.

I would get ahold of a little fridge to keep the spikes in if the wife won't allow them in the main fridge. They don't hurt anything though.

I would buy them in small numbers if that's the case because they will not last long at all in your basement (refer to the other "maggot" thread on here).

If limited to basement storage only, you might want to switch up and buy waxworms. They are fine stored in a cool basement... no need to refrigerate them. ;)

I forgot I had the little fridge out of the camper put in the basement.  I put htem in there so I do have a place to store them now,  even though the first bunch from teh baitshop are already shot.
