Jason Mitchell Rods
« on: Oct 22, 2007, 07:25 PM »
After reading some really good reviews about these rods I ponied up and bought one.  For a rod in the $30.00 range they looked to be of good quality.  I received mine the other day and thinking these rods were handmade by Jason Mitchell himself, but lo and behold there is a Made in China sticker on the bottom the handle!   :o I can tell that they were mass produced as there is epoxy in the eyelets and the eyelets do not line up correctly.  :(
Bring on the ice!!!!!!!  <br />

Just like anything else....    China this, China that...

I bought a Genz rod with the same porblem, still use it though.

Buy from the Thorne Bros or make your own.  At least then you know it was assembled in America ::)

Thanks for the Heads up Icenutter.

I figured the price was on the low side for a US made rod. I have enough China rods in my collection and don't really want anymore.

Are you sure that particular part wasnt just made in China?  I was thinking about picking up a few of these rods from all the good reviews on the Fishing Minnesota forum.  Maybe not now though. :-\

CB, this will be my second season using these rods and I have no complaints what so ever.  Icenutter appears to have gotten ahold of one that slipped through the QA cracks, as I have six of these rods and the eyelets line up perfectly on all of them.  I encourage you to take a look at these rods and judge for yourself.   In this price range these rods are hard to beat.

I don't know or care where the rods or rod components were made because for the price of these rods I am yet to find a better made, or quality rod.
I used 3 of the Jason Mitchell "guide series" rods last year and I was sold on them! The eyelets were a bit small for using a slip bobber outside, but I was told that this year the smaller eyelet rods are sold as a trap series, and the new rods are the elite series, and they have bigger eyelets.
I just picked up 2 of the new spring bobber rods and they look awesome!  I have recommended these rods to many of my ice fishing buddies and for 30 bucks I would put them against rods that I have that cost twice as much!  If you got a bad one I would send it back! (if they don't help you out, then I'd be worried too!) I have no complaints at all with the rods I've bought..
I am wanting to try out the heavier rod for pike and the "meat stick" looks to be great as well.  Just my humble opinion but I do like the rods.

Tell you what- haven't handled a Mitchell yet, but those Genz sticks didn't impress me at all, the reel acts like it wants to fall off, and for the $, I bought a St Croix, since everyone was saying how good they were, and I like it so far, just haven't used it yet.

I agree about the Genz sticks.  I got the silver series and the reel stinks.  I got a $10 reel from BPS that was better than the one on the Genz stick.  The rod though was good.

I have a few of their rods and love them (Jason Mitchells).  I have had a few Thorne Brothers as well but I do think the Mitchells are comparible.  I am guessing you might have just got a rod that slipped through the cracks and you should contact them.  I don't think you are going to find a better rod for the money and can honestly say that I LOVE my sticks.

Hear ya on posts status????

I will saw this about rods, everyone has there preference.
I like the blue ice rods for dead sticks, some on the gander rods for jigging.
I also bought a st. croix and would saw I use it but its not my favorite.

Save the money, buy a case! There are tons of well priced rods out there, find the one ya like and protect it.
Yep the genz rods are terrible, crap from everyone I know who bought em. Buzz sticks especially.

I really enjoy my st. croix rods.  I also put some abu reels on them and they work great.    Not sure they are hand made though
