Pike Spearing
« on: Nov 02, 2007, 04:55 PM »
Alright. If you haven't heard of it, or seen it, I think this would be something people in Wisconsin would enjoy. Yeah, we have Sturgeon Spearing which is a gift to have and I love it. But I love spearing and I feel strongly that there is no reason we cannot have pike spearing.. There are a number of states such as Minn, S & N Dakota that partake in this sport already and it's a growing trend every year.

So I'm looking for views from others about this and the possibility of this being introduced to Wisconsin. Why the DNR hasn't brushed with the possibility is beyond me. It's money in their pocket which they love, there isn't a shortage of northern and I'm sure there are plenty of people that would love to do this during a selected time of the ice season. So let me hear some opinions as this is a logical situation and should be treated as such.

You pose a good question GatorBait – There seems to be such a negative connotation of spearing in WI that I haven't given it any thought. I know it makes me sick to hear/see the big Muskies getting speared so that is probably why I wouldn't pursue it. It still amazes me the number of so called fisherman who can't tell them apart. If there was a controlled season and size requirements I suppose a Pike spearing season would work, but I still wouldn't participate.

Personally! I'd rather catch a fish twice, than spear it once. But, I do go sturgeon spearing.   ???   Because, in WI. on the Winnebago chain. One can spear. one fish per year, with limits of course.

Hey guys... move to Alaska!  Pike spearing is legal and ENCOURAGED by Fish & Game (in many parts of the state) because pike are considered an invasive species that threaten the salmon stocks.  No limit on size or numbers in most parts of the state!

Spearing is only legal in Minnesota if there are no muskies in the system. Spearing is prohibited on Mille Lacs, Leech, Cass, Winni, and anything attached to the St. Croix River. You don't need to tell the difference if muskies aren't in the water. We have many lakes in Minnesota that are too swampy for muskies to survive, but the same lake can produce some real gators!
