Clam yukon tub bowing?
« on: Feb 14, 2011, 05:34 PM »
Has anyone with a yukon or other 2 person shanty had a problem with their tub bowing in between the seats? All i can think is the weight of the seats being mounted is putting pressure on the tub bowing it in. frustrating

i have a clam nanook, and i couldn't believe how much the seats weighed  :-\. i took one out, now it's much lighter and it leaves a ton of room for storage when hauling, and more fishing room too after your all set up. i haven't had any trouble with bowing.....

I am also having the same problem with my Yukon. It seemed to happen right after putting the seats in, even before anyone had a chance to sit in it.? It doesn't seem to be getting any worse with use though. The seats are super comfy though, so i try to ignore the twisted top rail of the sled.  :-\

I also have a clam yukon  its about three years old and has no issues with bowing might be one of the older ones with the heavier tub.  It does seem that they have started to use less expensive materials but the price still goes up?

Clam Yukon tub WAS bowing - not well thought out in the manufacture.  So I had to modify the square tubing and attach some angle iron to act as supports and provide strength when the seat swivels and I have to lean to the side to reach something.
The square tubing is just an inch short of sitting in the lower groove of the moulded tub.  When you sit and put weight on the square tube frame (i'm 170 lbs) ... because it wasnt made right ...the side of the tub has to bend where the seats attach....so the tubing can rest on the tub floor.   Confused?    Newer yukon owners understand this.
Where the square tubing touches the floor there is a short horizontal piece of square tubing.  Remove this and cut off 2 inches or three, off the "legs"  this allows you to sit back in the seat (the seats lean forward otherwise)  Then install those  small horizontal bars to the front this time - not to the rear as clam directs us.  This will reduce the 'pull and warp' as described.
I wanted to distribute the weight and provide lateral stability when I reached down to the side (notice the lean of the seat, brackets  etc?)  so I increased the base of support and instead of the narrow horrizontal bars... I used a two 22 inch 'L bracket' .  Now the seats are considerably more stable as they swivel and I lean over to p/u etc....

I also removed the bolts .....that attach the seat tubing to the side of the tub.... and replaced them with removable pins.  When I want to remove a seat.. or both seats.... the pins are pulled and its fast and easy to empty out the yukon !  This I highly recommend !
