Tobin lake vs Reindeer lake
« on: Apr 05, 2007, 02:35 PM »
Hey guys,I need some advice.Im planning a week long fishing adventure in July.My question is Tobin vs reindeer. After seeing the massive pike coming out of Tobin and i hear there are some decent wallski,s to,Its making my decision rather difficult to make that massive 11ookm drive to Reindeer.I heard the walleyes arnt very big coming out of reindeer and from Edmonton the drive is cut in half!!Is there anyone who has been to both lakes? What advice can someone give me about Tobin. If u dont wanna post it...Please send me a personal message.I also talked to the people at reindeer lake and they said the biggest pike they caught was 28pounds.....Thats a joke compared to Tobin.I think i might of saved myself a really long drive...when paradise is only 6 hours away..any advice is good advice.Hows the camping?Or motels.

I have never been to reindeer-always wanted to go there to try things out.
I live near tobin so I fish the lake quite a bit in the summer-july is definitely not prime time up here but the fishing is always pretty consistant
I have never fished the flats in the summer but i hear guys still catch monsters long-lining herring or fishing floats or big spoons-it can get really rough in the flats and there are alot of deadheads-it is full of timber so pick a reasonably calm day to venture out that way
The river and the lake can be good in july-be prepared to catch a slug of little walleyes before catching a big one-the lake and river are full of them. It is spotty that way but when the big ones are going, they are going.  Nipawin has a few hotels-kingfisher, green groves is where I would suggest in town-there is a regional campground-right near the river-it is okay. There are cabins you can book called Mcsweeney's right near the river also
At the lake, there is tobin lake resort-silvertip outfitters rents boats and he might have a good idea of someone to rent a cabin from at the lake. I have fished the river alot so I usually go fish the lake now.
Hope that helps

Emt...It,s people like u that make fishing a great sport.Thx for all the info.I am definetly gonna give Tobin a shot this year.I know July isnt the best time to go but unfortuantly its the only time everyone can get off work.Is there any other decent lakes in the area around Tobin. One week at a lake is a longtime sometimes.Thk u again and if i may ,I would like to send u a personal message sometime closer to the date and see how the fishing is.

yah, no problem-you will definitely catch fish coming up here-the river and lake are full of walleyes-small jigs, leeches, nightcrawlers and minnows all work-it is funny here-you can soak a leech for hours, switch up to a crawler and boom, catch a fish right away.
I will definitely be on the lake lots this summer-I try to get out at least once a week or so. you can contact me and I will let you know how the bite is going and what is working
As for lakes around here, there are lots-I have not gone exploring much around here-I usually just fish tobin-I just moved here last year so I am still intrigued fishing the lake. The hanson lake road starts at smeaton-it is about 60kms west of nipawin-turn north and there are tons of lakes up there with walleyes, pike, perch, cutthroats, rainbows, brookies, etc...  I am sure you will find lots of places to fish on tobin-it is huge and so is the river system. Both have big walleyes in them.

yep-made that trip 3 times last year
it is about 7 hours from nipawin to edmonton-700 kms or so-Tobin is only about 30-40 kms from nipawin
round trip-about 7 1/2 hours

i don't know if you like fishing other trout at all but shannon lake is a little over an hours drive from nipawin and in my mind is one of the most picturesque lakes i have seen anywhere and when they cooperate some really nice brown trout are caught there, lots of other trout lakes in the area as well just an hour to an hour and a half NW of nipawin.

as far as pure trophy fishing I would say stick to tobin/sask river if you are in the nipawin area.

Hey Warren77

The Princecraft 16.5 will be fine, just like anywhere if the waves come up be careful.

it's not bad for logs, keep your eyes open, polarized glasses on and boat at a reasonable speed and it will be ok.

Lots of the drifting logs gone in the last couple years, deadheads are nasty especially out of the main river channel.  The flats - go slow and be careful.  If looking for monster pike you should be going slow and looking anyway.

You wont be disappointed with Tobin.  Bigger walleyes than reindeer.  Can park vehicle there and it wont get damaged

We stay at the Shorebird inn At Tobin Lake Resort.  Its brand new, Lakefront and is a good location for fishing.

Good Luck

if your looking for a boat and guide just go to silvertip outfitting or tobin lake resort or prudens point resort. all have accomadations, a variety of boat rentals(tobin lk. resort has a pile of different rentals to pick from) and guides to hire.

Hear is an example of the deadheads you will find in Tobin Lake, real prop busters if you are not careful.

There is a fair amount of wood drifting too.

depends where you are on the lake around nipawin, eagles nest etc. its more of a big river than a lake with pretty good  a current the farther east you go the lake gets wider(prudens point area etc) and the flat shallower areas get larger as well. than once you are out on the big lake(the flats) than its miles of shallow water mostly 8-15 feet(pike country).

If you can find the river channel(petagan) through the flats it makes for some easier going and access to deep water for the big pike.  Most of those outside turns in the river channel have weedbeds with a good drop-off, good for walleye, perch and pike.

fishing was good, my pictures from the trip are on the pictures board. resort was a little messy ie boats and other equipment laying around but they are not completely open yet, the store and restaurant are  pretty much brand new wasn't open when we were they as they don't run it in the winter but looking pretty nice on the inside.

If you are staying at the resort, driving around in the boat will not be that bad-just stick to the middle. Use the internet to get a map of the lake-I am sure you could get one somewhere in nipawin, on your way through, of the lake and the popular spots-on july 1st weekend, you will know where the fish are biting-trust me.  If I am off, I will probably be out there-I should have a better idea in a month or so if I will be off any of those days.
