JIGGING for Pike?
« on: Feb 15, 2007, 01:39 PM »
I read thru some of the literature but I see that 95% of folks use tip-ups for pike. That's not an option for me. Who jigs for pike and what are you successful with? Spoons? Jigs? The lake I might be heading to is known for its pike....they like to smack big spoons during the open water season.....would they react similarly to spoons under the ice? Help!

i talked to one bait seller and he told me to use spoons 5inches or bigger and thats with a 5inch minnow.  big is ok, you'll catch larger fish but not as many.  i would take both spoons and jigs of various sizes.  if pike are aggressive they'll hit almost anything but remember timing and location are important.  i'm no expert but that's just what i've noticed on my outtings for pike

Oooops forgot to mention that I can't use minnows or fish for bait either.

plastics used for bass are good, try something with scent like berkley.  try all different kinds, grubs, worms, tubes, etc.  and in the usual colors, chartruse, white, black, brown, green.

you can also try deer hair jigs, marabou jigs and i hear rabbit hair is getting popular.  i'm gonna test out some new rabbit hair jigs i got made next week so i'll see if they actually work.  oh and if you're allowed, trying tipping the lures with waxworms or something similar for some added scent.  hope this helps

We CAN use tip-ups but it's kind of a waste because we're only allowed one line while icefishing....so sitting and watching one tip up would be kina pointless. And we can use bait, just not fin fish. And we still manage to come out on top of our categories ;)2

get some large tube jiggs white in color bait with minnow also get some pro cure butt juice and squirt it in the tube. also a yellow and orange jig head with a pumpkin seed double tail tiped with a minnow is your two best bets
