non target fish in Pike water?
« on: Jan 19, 2009, 09:27 PM »
Are there any other fish that tend to share the same areas as pike? Do you look for other game fish to locate Pike?
For example I found a nice flat on a new lake, I set up my tipups and had fish all day. The problem all large mouth bass. While jigging a full day of small gills about 4-6 inch's.
Would you stay in the same area or move on, do pike share the same water as large mouth bass? Or should i move on BC I'm in an area primary for bass not pike.
Any other fish you look for when on new water? Dink perch, walleyes etc?

I look more for structure and contour than anything else. Try to get a topographic map of where you are fishing and look for coves or "inside s curves" in the shorelines or underwater depth changes. I have most of my luck in shallow (2-6 ft) water that is weedy or has weedy patches. I only fish for pike really, so I don't know much about what fish they live with, but if there is forage fish in the area, there are probably Northerns too.
Pike fishing is a like a cruel mistress that is too beautiful to leave.

Dink perch are definately a good sign, Pike and Lake trout have been known to frequent the smae areas on a lake I fish.

I would try the spot a couple times before giving up on it.  Some days pike are inactive.  If you have a camera, punch some holes and spend some time looking around to see if you see any pike.
