Lake Erie ice vs Storm
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 09:11 AM »
How does everyone think the ice on Lake Erie will hold up to this storm we are having? The high winds from the NE and ENE kind of concern me.
I know we can't all stay here forever, so I want to write my words on the face of today. And then theyll paint it.  "Shannon Hoon"

well the lake is mostly locked up..so i wouldnt worry to much about that..and the snow will be very light and fluffly..i bet maybe only an inch or so will actually stick to the ice.

I've got my fingers crossed too!!  I think if this storm blows through by Thurs I am going to take the afternoon off to try and ice some eyes.

I think the high winds will definitely effect the lake,
there's a large pressure crack out there now.If
that opens up more & snow blows over the top of it,
no tellin how large it could be, from just looking at it.

Should be safe again?    Now thats funny!
I don't know how familair you are with lake
erie, but one day it could be fine & the next 10 feet of
open water @ the pressure crack.Because of high winds.

lol...i may have not worded myself correctly. lol. i know what you mean..but i think much of the fear of a re opening isnt gonna happen..the entire erie basin is locked..so even if pressure ridges split..they will refreeze in short order..i dont suggest crossing any of them..but the fear of the lake breaking up i think is just not gonna happen..

im worried about the darn snow....my golf cart wont run on any more the 8 inches....and that will suck for this weekends tourney. lol.

I really have not made up my mind yet, I'm gonna wait and see what reports I get.  Cawtawba, Brest Bay, and Crane creek are all posibilities.  They are saying the wind should switch to Northerly by then so and cracks should hold together good.

Supposed to have  15-25 w/nw  winds on thurs.  Watch your  arse out there.   You cant get a  worse offshore wind than that.

Were you guys on Breast Bay? Also, did they bite all day or just the prime times?
That's awesome you got your limit, any hogs or pics?

I fished Erie most of my life before moving up here seversl years ago. That N/E wind if strong enough will push water under the ice and eventualy bust it apart.I've seen it a lot of times in 40 years of fishing the bay....I hope it does'nt happen to you guys, you deserve a good winter of fishing.

hows the ice doin after all that wind during that snow we had??? i heard through the grape vine that there was a 2 foot crack from stoney point to the marina.. but u know how that goes. i was just wonderin if anyone has seen it? although it probably doesnt matter if the wind stays down and it stays cold
