So Sweetie It Is...or..A Laker's Delight
« on: Jan 25, 2007, 06:27 PM »
Out on Cold Lake...in a Secret Spot, as Sweetie is shy and doesn't like to fish with crowds...and we were joined by Grizzbear, his wife, and their lovely little one...
We almost didn't go out today, as I had an appointment over in Bonnyville, and the forecast was for high winds..but after lunch, we decided to head out to a different spot...Peter's first hit surprised him...a ling cod or burbot or eel pout, or whatever you call it...I call it ugly:

He had just put his jig back down to the bottom, when this lovely one hit...86 cm. and a shade under 16 lbs..

This one is his personal best, and this will give you an idea of how big it was...and what it can eat.

How long did it take to bring it to ice? Never having caught one how do they fight compared to other fish?

Great Catch, Keep'em coming
The nameless men who nameless rivers travel,
And in strange valleys greet strange deaths alone;
The grim, intrepid ones who would unravel
The mysteries that shroud the Polar Zone.

Prairiegoat, Sweetie fishes with a light  line, and so takes great care in bringing up the big ones...this one came up about 40 feet, then went
back down and didn't want to budge...did this three or four times, so it took a patient ten minutes for Sweetie to work it to the ice.  When I saw
the size of the head, I was amazed...and it gave the unmistakable "grunt" and let huge bubbles out of its air-bladder...it took a couple of minutes for Sweetie to guide its head into the hole, and even then it gave a good fight...thrashed around and it was not easy to gently get my fingers under the gill casing and lift it out.  Compared to other fish..I would say, exciting.  And when you have one over twelve or fourteen pounds, your wrists know that it is a big one...part of the excitement is praying that you don't lose it when it swims up with your hook and then sounds down again..the anticipation is in finding out just how big it is.  A three pound rainbow is exciting in a different way, as is a cutt from under the ice.  Even a one pound perch can be exciting.
