Helmet law question
« on: Feb 26, 2007, 08:06 PM »
Is a helmet for a 6 yo passenger, on a snowmobile, mandatory in Manitoba?
If so, where in Winnipeg, do you purchase a light enough helmet that won't hurt a small neck?
I had one years ago for my kids but we found it oh so heavy and very dangerous.(afraid they'd snap their necks.......(sometimes wished I could wring their necks but that's a different story  ;D )
Later, we had a light motocross youth helmet that was lighter but it too would be too heavy for a 6 yo.
Any info would be appreciated.

i would def put a helmet on a 6yo.  wouldnt think twice and also i believe no matter the age it is illegal to sled without one.

i would go for a motocross style helmet but some of them are $$$$$.  either that or look at some pawn shops or canadian tire might have some for a good deal.  but if the kid sleds lots then a higher end one may be good.

i have found the more money you pay the lighter they are.  bought a arctic cat txi 4 years ago for 399 and its as light at a baseball helmet.  next helmet will be a motocross style and some goggles for my eye glasses.

Doesn't matter if it's legal or not.  After two deadly head injuries in the family within the last 6 months, I'm think there is no excuse for not protecting your head.

Just my 2 cents

I agree 100% about protecting his head. My son was in the Trauma Unit at Health Sciences for 6 weeks because of a head/brain injury plus he broke his neck in 2 places.
I thank God everyday that he fully recovered. This time last year, things were prettly bleak when he had to learn how to walk again among other things.
I just don't want my Grandson to suffer in ANY way...that includes getting whiplash because the helmet is too heavy. Is there anyone out there with experience with safely outfitting a child with a CSA approved helmet  ???

A lot of companies do make youth helmets, so yes I would say do wear a helmet.  As far as how heavy they are, I don't really know.  I'm assuming those who have made the helmets would at least test to see if they are heavy enough to break a neck or even cause whiplash when decelerating fast.  The unfortunate part is how expensive helmets are, because a properly fitting helmet will often be too small next year, if not the year after.  Sorry Blue Igloo, but I can't tell you anything about outfitting a child with a helmet...we (FXR) don't make children's helmets yet.

Helmet weight is always a problem, even for adult heads.  Cdn Tire has this youth helmet..
Their website shows it as a snowmobile helmet, but it says there are 2 top vents.  Chances are it's a motocross helmet.

SIR has this open faced version for youths.

I agree with everyone wearing helmets...unfortunatel y one doesn't always see it....

On a related, but somewhat off-topic note, after getting my motorcycle license in SK years ago where helmets are required, I moved to MB and find all kinds of people driving bikes without helmets.  One fellow told me there is a medical exemption...I wouldn't think stupidity would qualify.  Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Here is a link to a Canadian supplier that carries a lot of snowmobile and atv helmets and accessories. I have bought some items from them and visited their Guelph store once. Pretty nice stuff. You can find all kinds of kids stuff there - www.royaldistributing. com

With your bravo I wouldn't bother with helmets, your not going fast or far, but it is the law to have them ::). I think  it is because we have healthcare we ALL pay into we all have an interest in the safety of others, you crack your head open we all have to pay for it :-[

if i were you i would call the cops, report the plate numbers and laugh.  i cant understand why people dont wear helmets.  only time i dont wear one is when unloading, loading, and gasing up.  those cos should be charged just like anyone else would be.

think of this. #1  your out snowmobiling to your fishing spot without a helmet on.  minding your own business going 20kmh.  here comes a snowmobiler going 60mph and wham smokes you.  you fly off your snowmobile and smack your head on the ice.  now your dead.  the guy that hit you falls off his/her sled and is wearing a helmet and is fine but a few bruses.

now this.  #2 your out snowmobiling to your fishing spot with a helmet on.  minding your own business going 20kmh.  here comes a snowmobiler going 60mph and wham smokes you.  you fly off your snowmobile and smack your head on the ice.  your not dead but have a few bruises.  the guy that hit you falls off his/her sled and is wearing a helmet and is fine but a few bruses.

dont know which you would choose but i take #2.

on another note if you get hit and you dont have a registered sled, but the guy that hit you does you are SCREWED.  and also cops can actually take your sled right from in front of you if its not registered.  wouldnt want that happening if your unloading at your favorite lake or trail head

Blue Igloo, slipped my mind about your son, glad to hear everything is going well.  I'm sure you should be able to find a helmet to work.  Even a bicycle helmet would be better than nothing.  Not sure if it's legal on a powered machine, but still better than nothing.

Jeremeyw111, you're comment "your not going fast or far" bothers me.  One family member was being towed by at slow speeds with a broken machine when it happened.  It doesn't matter how fast you're going one wrong move and things can end up devastating.

Snopro31, agree with you.  Was out about 10 years ago.  Decided to go see how my cousin was doing fishing about a mile away.  Jumped on the snowmobile to go see, hit an ice rift and end over ended the machine, no helmet on.  With everytihing thats happened lately, I WON'T be doing that again.

Just my rant again, powered machines(snowmobiles, quads, 3 wheelers, dirt bikes), everyone should have something on their head.  I know I may sound paranoid but can't help myself.

Hmm...my brother is coming in from Guelph this week...with no machines myself though, my kids can do without at present.
