Augers ??
« on: Jan 05, 2007, 04:38 PM »

Was at my local Gander Mountain and looking at hand augers.

Just getting back into this and want to buy one.

They have an 8" Mora for $40 and an 8" Lazer ( I think that was the name) for $75.

So would someone tell what is the better buy and why the big difference in price and are there any other options??

Thanks!

I have a Mora that works fine, but I'm betting everyone on here will tell you to spend the extra money and go with the Lazer.

I'm sure the Lazer's a lot faster auger -- cuts better. I've never used one, but my younger brother (who I usually delegate to do the drilling  ;) ) tried a Lazer after using mine and said it was much better. My 8-inch Mora has served me well, but I'm now looking at power augers. Now, I'm kinda wishing I would have bought a 6-inch hand auger (which would require less effort) to use for early ice and panfishing. But, it's nice to get the exercise, too, though.  :)

Now you have me wondering if I should go for a six incher as I will eventually buy a power job ( in a year or two) but the thing is I will be fishing for northerns with tip-ups and also jigging for perch.

Am totally in a quandry at this point!!  ::)

First thing I need is some ice tho!!   Going nuts with this warm weather here!   >:(

Well seeing that you're probably going to be fishing in upstate ny, this year you will probably be lucky to get on the ice much at all. :'(

If you are looking into a pwoer auger somewhere soon down the line, I would say that you might as well just get an 8 inch Mora. Its a good auger, and it will serve you fine until you decide what power auger you want to purchase. I wouldn't want to try to pull a big pike through a 6 inch hole.

An 8 inch Mora will take a little elbow grease, but it won't kill you if you're in good shape. 8)

Heck, they'll both make a hole and that's all that really matters. Since you don't have ice yet, I'm guessing your living in an area where the ice won't get real thick. It's pretty easy to get googly-eyed over equipment by looking at the posts on this site. I can't believe all the stuff I've bought in the past year since stumbling on to Iceshanty.com. I love it all and would hate to part with my arsenal, but also had a lot of fun when all I had were a few jiggin' sticks and a five-gallon bucket.

Yeah, but I am turning 63 this month and altho still in pretty good shape am old and smart enough to not want to expend any un-needed energy!!   ;D

Altho I live in the Albany area I have fished the upper end of Champlain a couple years ago.
It was like 30" of ice in Feb/March!!!
Had someone with a power auger that did the holes!!!

Need whatever would work the best.

Any other brands out there?

Thanks  PWR BAIT.

I'll check in to the Nils Master.

Did so and at Cabela's it's $99.99.

Is it worth the extra money?

Being a Scotsman I tend to be frugal!!   ;D

dfpaul, YES !!! the Nils is worth the extra money. I would pay $100 for a Nils before I'd pay $50 for any other auger.

The Nils Master is the best hand auger if you are willing to spend the money. You don't even have the push down on the auger to drill holes, it simply shaves away the ice and cuts through with great speed and ease. I have a Nils Master power auger, and it has a detachable auger that quickly changes into a hand auger. That cost around 500 bucks, but in my opinion (and that of many others) it is the best power auger out there.

Out of the Lazer, Mora and Nils, buy the Nils. Its worth the money. Just take care of it, and you'll be a proud owner of one of the nicest augers out there.

By the way, what town do you live in down in Columbia County? I figure I'm fairly close to you, in Westerlo, on the Greene/Albany County border. 8)

I have an 8" lazer that is 5 years old. Never changed the blades. Mostly because the second year I bought a Strikemaster Lazer 8" power auger. I use the hand auger when the ice is less than 6".  The power after that. Anyway I always heard the Nils was a great auger but I do not know how it can be that much easier than the lazer.
Probably can not go wrong with either.

i have a mora 6 & 8", went to the lazer 6" what a difference, so much easier and got my buddies to switch too and they were happy.this was all over several years and the lazere WAS great, only had to sharpen after 4-5 yrs, but after becoming somwhat disabled, i bought a 4.5" nilsmaster so i could punch holes easier (fishing for panfish obviously) and man i couldn't believe how easy, yes it is a smaller one, but with the 6" lazer, after a couple holes i'd have to rest, but with this nils master, i can punch 5 or more with no problem. the lazer is much better than the moras, but the nils master has my vote. hope this helps

I have a 6" Mora and an 8" Lazer auger and they both work fine, but the lazer is quite a bit quicker. I bought the power drill attachment and handle while at Gander Mtn. and it really does work. I found that the 6" Mora w/drill is good up to 12" of ice and the 8" Lazer w/drill is good up to 8" of ice. Tip - bring an extra battery. It sucks when the juice runs out and you don't have the handle assembly with you.

I had a lazer 8" hand auger for a while. Cut great however after the ice got too thick I realized I should of gone with a 6".

I would look at a 6" of either before another 8" hand auger.

save the money and use a spud this winter. Everyone knows the ice won't be very thick. The money you save this year, can be added to Mo'powa next year!

Here's a suggestion, it's not a cheap way to do it but you'll have coverage and versatility.  Buy a 6" Nils manual now.  In a couple of years when you're ready to go gas, get the 8" Nils with powerhead.  With maybe one exception, you'll then have everything covered as well as get the versatility of using both with power or in manual mode.  The one exception is if you chase HUGE pike or lakers.  From what I hear, you MAY need a 10" for those.  Personally, I'm not fond of 10" holes.  You'll be more than happy with Nils drills as long as you take care with the blades...again, it's not the least expensive approach.

Why not just get the 8" Nils hand auger now and add the power head later if and when you feel the need ??? Chances are if you don't fish where you're regularly drilling through more than 12"-16" of ice you'll never feel the need.

That's what I have been thinking Phoenix and Chris.

The 8" Nils now and work up to a power head for it in a year or two.

Thanks!

7 " lazer can re-open holes and wife doesn't mind using
Lazer is always with us 8)
