Die Hard
« on: Sep 27, 2007, 11:34 PM »
My girlfriend and I were going to a somewhat local reservoir (80 miles away). We got half way there, when I realized I forgot the chairs. I stopped to call my uncle, who had been out partying all night, to see if he would pick them up on his way down. I couldn't get a hold of him as I figured he had already left, or was to drunk to even hear his phone ring. We turned around, and headed back to town. I got back to my place and grabbed the chairs. I figured I better fuel up again. It had snowed a lot in the last week, and got warm on towards the weekend. The water was running down the rain gutter at the gas station, and freezing when it hit the ground. I went in and paid for gas, and was walking back to my truck. The next thing I knew, my girlfriend was kneeling beside me crying, and asking if I was alright. All I knew was I had one hell of a headache, couldn't see, and the side of my face was extremely numb. Finally I came around enough to talk to the gas clerk about if I needed an ambulance or not, which being the "tough" guy I am, I refused. The gf and I loaded up and headed back out of town. The whole time she was crying that I needed to go to the ER. About 10 miles out of town, I finally told her that I would go, and if I was OK, were getting gone so I could fish. OK she says.  On the way back to town, we pass my uncle. I get him pulled over, he looks at me and says "there is no blood, put some snow on it, you'll be fine". Still went to the ER because of crying GF, and got checked out. Dr. said everything was fine. Finally got to go fishing, and speared a 10 lb northern. Two days later, still had a massive headache. Got into to see my regular Dr., and he said I had a class II concussion.
I know this wasn't much of a story, but I find it ironic that I have never fell on the ice out fishing, but getting gas to go fishing about laid me up. ::) ;D

Take if from an EMT: A lot of times things won't show up for a couple of days. My father fell from about 14' up on sunday. He was out cold and his eye rolled up in the back of his head. My initial assesment- I thought he was dead. It took about 45 seconds while I was on the phone to 911 before he came to. Some of that time, he was not breathing.  Everything checked out fine then, but he is back getting checked out again right now as I type this becuase he has lost his short term memory. Smacking your head is not a joke!

My uncle was helping push start a car at Watkins Glen a couple years back, and slipped and hit his head on the bumper.  He had nothing but a headache.  But 3 months later he was in the hospital with blood on the brain, and is now in the vet's home...plate missing from his skull, and acting like a stroke victim.

Always get head trauma checked.

I'll 3rd that.  As a medical assistant in a Neurosurgical practice we see lots of delayed symptoms from head injuries.  They're no joke.  Always always always get them checked out

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

I rememeber a few ice seasons ago i got up to chase the first flag of the day, well as i was half jogging to it one of my ice cletes came off. Instead of stopping and putting it back on continued to walk at a fast pace when of course i went head over heels and slammed my head against the ice. My hat and sunglasses flew like 20 feet behind me. I saw stars!!!! Didint feel "right" for maybe 5 minutes but got my bearings back. If i learned one thing it was the last time i wore cheap ice spikes lol.
But you can never discount a hard blow to the head, like someone said it could be much later when you really feel the effect of it all.

It's odd how doctors differ these days, sad really, when my knee was blown out playing football this past spring, on field acessment: Badly torn ACL, ER visit 10 hrs. later: Sprained MCL. MRI : Complete tears of the ACL & MCL, surgery: Complete tears of the ACL, MCL and slight lateral tear of the maniscus. Yeah, on subject again, those head injuries are no joke. I had to get my cat scanned in high school a couple times because they thought I had concussions, but nothing showed up, but the second time I had tell tale signs and symptoms of a concussion. Then my senior year they thought I might have gotten a concussion, no biggy though, I just hit the quarterback so hard I put a stress fracture in my Maxilla underneath my left eye.
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

No wonder nothing showed up...cats are evolutionary dead ends, and they never come when called either, unless you are cleaning your catch.

Sorry, couldn't resist being a wise-a**.
