Jiffy Stealth STX 3hp 10"
« on: Dec 07, 2006, 08:39 PM »
I am shopping around for a new auger and I have had pretty good luck with my ole girl Jiffy, but its time to upgrade.  I have been looking at buying the STX, but I figured I would ask the pro's first before I drop $469.  I am not totally sold on Jiffy so I would really appreciate your opinion's before I make a purchase.  Thanks!

I would consider a 8" auger. I feel the 10" is dangerous to small children, small dogs, flashers, legs etc. The only people that I know that insist on a 10", are lake trout fisherman who fish under arctic conditions. They feel the larger size keeps the hole from freezing up to fast! Jiffy is the company that started it all, and is made by fine folks in Wisconsin. I would consider the Strikemaster lazer if you want something lighter, and the Nils if you want the lightest, and the best made!

I bought the 10 " Stealth STX last year.  Nice sharp blades, big fast holes!  My only beef is the design of the head assembly.  For some reason it is not a welded, one piece design like the other auger styles.  There is a cross bolt that runs through the end of the cutting spiral shaft that in turn attaches to the cutting head.  Came loose a bunch of times on me despite my best attempts to tighten/re-tighten.  Finally got fed up and welded the thing solid with my mig welder. Problem solved!  The other comment is that the customer service sucks.  Very rude and very quick to blow you off with tech questions.  I will remember that when I buy my next auger down the road.

go for the 2 HP - 8" or 9" no real need for the 10". go with the 2HP lighter than the heavy 3 HP.
My .02 cents.

I have a 3HP model 30 jiffy in a 9" blade.  :flex: wish I'd gotten the 2 HP now.  :flex:

I am with ya camo  I bought  a stx 2hp  9" last year.  I bought it direct jiffy as a demo.  and saved $$$..  I am kinda in the 4 stroke mode right now.  Just bought my first 4 stoke outboard this summer and would not own another 2 stroke.  my natural spin after i start up my jiffy swings the exhaust right @ me...  and i smell worse the rest of the day :o  But what a trolling machine it is.

good luck

I'd just gotten an Ardisam(Eskimo) also of Wisconsin, 2hp (51cc) with the 10"... our ice is just getting to the safe stage now- will try to remember a post here to report on its smile-factor; at $370 it's a good bit less than the jiffy.

Nothing smells better than 2 stroke smoke. ;D

GiddyUp what type of fishing do you do most of the time? The problem with a 10 inch hole is Frabills Pro thermal tip ups don't sit perfectly on top. They work but not great where as a 9 inch hole is perfect.
pour me another one, I'm finished with the other one

I will second that! I have a model 30 10". I am a lake trout fisherman and the holes do stay open longer. However, I have fished days when the holes would close up faster than the cover on my bait bucket closes! Jiffy makes a great auger. They are very dependable once you get them tuned up out of the box. If you have any questions about the tuning of the carb, pm me!

I mean its all about what your fishing for and what you need. I am going to put money on the fact that you will never need a 10" auger. I have an 8" Nils Master auger, and it is probably the best auger out there if you're willing to drop half a grand. 3hp, 10 inch Jiffy is big and heavy, I can guarantee that. I wouldn't go for the 10", but it is ultimately your decision.

There is a TON of info on our forum's auger board. Check it out....and look at everything.

I own one, and if the old lady would put up with it I'd sleep with it.

You should have seen my post in the Equipment\inventions area to solve this problem.

Also if you get a 4 stroke doesn't the power head always have to be verticle or layed on a particuliar side. I know my outboard can only be laid down on one side. Might be a PITA worring about that.

I have a Jiffy Stealth 2hp 8 inch and it has plenty of power.  With the new blades having the 5 cutting edges the 2hp is plenty.  I would recomend getting the regular Stealth and not the STX.  They are exactly the same except for the blades.  You can't even tell the difference between the blades except with the STX logo on the blade.

Ha ha ha, Rocky Solid as much as I love ice fishing I don't think I would go as far as sleeping with the auger, although if it brought good luck from the fishing gods than the wife would be in BIG trouble ha ha.  Thanks to all of you for the fantastic input, a true group of professionals on this site and your opinions are much appreciated.  I had my sites set on the Jiffy 3hp 10", but I have to say since the forum I will be re-thinking my purchase.  Thanks again to all of you, GREAT SITE!!!  Fellow Upstate NY fishermen- I live a mile away from the Broadalbin Boat Launch and when I checked it out last night there was nothing but waves crashing on the shore.  Colder than a well diggers big toe last night and today, I can hear the ice growing as I write!!!

I bought a white lightning 4 years ago.  2hp  10" blade .  was limited on funds at the time and the 10" blade was all they had left.  Well the oldest son fell in to the waist when he was 4 that wasnt cool.  Traded that auger shaft to a guy for a 9" blade and its better  but still wish i had only an 8".  If I trade what i gut now it would be for a 2 hp  8"  stealth.  Im probly never going to see anything over 20 24" of ice and the 2 hp serves me well.

Fishing should be the exercise of your skills- and its rewards the places it brings you to
