Yup..been there 3 times....one snowmobile through (heavy heavy heavy clothes when wet), one in 4' of water (easy but cold), and one in 12'....that is scarry. I didn't do like that guy...in my head I remember saying "I have 5 minutes before I pass out". And I was lucky enough to have one of those nice steel skimmers that can be used as a chisel and eventually make a nice slot to grab with the end of it. In reality, when I put that sled through the ice, I stood it up on it's track and put the ski tips on the edge of the hole it left, went to the truck and warmed up and called a buddy...and we both got in and hoisted that thing onto the ice in less than 10 minutes and got out. We were only about 25 feet from shore, but it was wierd how cold it wasn't. Seriously, it's not what you think if you've never been in ice water for more than 10 minutes. Warming up phycally hurts though...especially the fingers and toes. Not something I want to do ever again. I have gutter spikes I keep in the pockets of my parka.
