Soft plastics for pike rig tip ups?
« on: Jan 01, 2013, 08:43 PM »
Just wondering if any of you use a big somewhat realistic looking soft plastic minnow for your pike rigs? If not, I'm gonna try it and report back my findings! But if any of you have tried please do tell!

I've used big twisty tail grubs on a jig head with mixed results....

I think it's a good idea, and it works. I just don't know how to pattern it yet.

Interesting my good sir! I got to thinkin, I'm a trapper and I use them dollar store plastic sharks on my Connibear triggers for otter...And a pike is pretty much sight feeder, so I reckon a big old white plastic minnow should get his attention as good as a dead lifeless chub or sucker savvy? More thoughts, experiences and especially pictures would be awesome!!

One thing that I've been thinking of doing through the ice.... a wacky rigged senko. Nothing has seen that super slow fall under the ice yet. It would take a while to get it down to the bottom, but it could be finessed like nothing else when you get it down there.

I used Magnum or Saltwater Powergubs jigging for pike. It's got a large profile but it's not so loud and flashy like a spoon.

I think this all plays into the neutral feeding mood, maybe after a front.

Sounds like a good idea, but what would make the fish hold on long enough for you to get there and catch him? With a dead sucker or chub once he hits, he finds out its a real fish and eats it. I'm afraid if he hits a plastic, he'll know its not a fish after a couple seconds and spit it before you can get there.

If we are talking tip ups, I'm doubtful anything other than live or dead meat will produce.

Never really thought bout that a whole bunch, I was thinkin a big stinkin powerbait of some minnow sort would work...I'm having a hard time catching any big shiners or chubs through the ice right now. But more pearl, northern redbelly, finescale, long nose and black nose dace then you could count! Biggest I catch of those though are maybe 3" and a bit...Not exactly big pike minnows. Work honkey fricken dory for pickeral though!

I've had pike try to eat my Aqua Vu so anything is possible.  I think if I was going to use plastics I would have to try a windlass style to get at least a little movement going on.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

I'm goin to buy a windlass tip up tomorrow! And I know what you mean I've had them smash my red and white bobber just sittin there on the water, kinda makes you wonder if they have any sense of food/not food at all, or maybe they just get grumpy and attack stuff :P
