Portable chairs
« on: Dec 14, 2022, 09:36 AM »
Switching from a flip to a hub this year to help ease down on weight, my flip weighs 146 lbs empty, and ill need to find a chair for my wife as im contest on a bucket, what is a good comfy portable chair, camping chairs make it kind of hard to lean forward and look down the hole, a lot of where we fish is sight fishing, just curious what everyone uses and trying to get some ideas for her, thanks in advance guys

Old fashioned aluminum webbed chair. Light weight and comfortable. Cheap at goodwill, second hand store or tag sales.

A three legged chair is a lot more stable than a four legged chair.

3 leg is nice and light, simple and gets the job done - not super comfy

Directors chair is the Cadillac choice but larger to haul

Folding chairs worked pretty good and takes up little room.  Aluminum, steel, wooden or even composite.  However my tush usually gets sore, so I go back to the hunting/camping style ones and director chairs style.  Last few seasons I used the heavy Eskimo Quad chair and it's super comfy.  Only wish it had a high back rest so I can rest my head.

I got a directors chair from Harbor Freight. Under $35.00 if I remember right. Folds down, is light weight, and has a side table that’s handy for many things. Nice height if you’re fishing outside.  ;D

Another option: I use a kid's plastic chair like this one. Bought cheap at a thrift store. I also use it for projects like changing tires. Pad the seat for cushion and insulation, 'cause it gets cold if you don't.

I bought the Clam folding cooler chair. I like the cooler section under the chair to keep bait in or tackle. It's a lot more comfortable than the one I had last year. We'll see at the end of this season. Year before I used a drummer's swivel stool. Very uncomfortable.
Tried ice fishing with Dynamite, UGH... where's my shanty?

I have two of the Eskimo PLAID XL FOLDING ICE CHAIR and I am really happy with them.  I use them in my hub, out in the elements while on the ice, and even around my yard during the warm months.

They are well-built, stable, and comfortable (way more comfortable than they look).  Most people are skeptical of them until they try one - then they do not want to give it back.  They work excellent for jigging (plenty forward enough for viewing flasher and watching hole) or they are great just for sitting back with a drink.  I also have one of the PLAID XL TRIPOD STOOL, which makes a decent table (it has cup holders) or can be used as an extra stool.  I go about 275 LBS and these chairs work great for me.

Be aware that Eskimo also has non-XL versions (just FOLDING ICE CHAIR and PLAID FOLDING ICE CHAIR).  I have seen these in person.  They appear to be the same run-of-the-mill, folding tripod chairs you can find anywhere (expect these say "Eskimo" on them).  These are lower in quality and capacity than the XL version.  Best of luck.

These are light and has some back support. Easy to lean forward to peep down the hole. Hate those 3-legged nut busters

X2 on the directors chair. Use it when in the hut. But I also use the tripod when hole hopping. No ball busting for me. Maybe size does matter.  :roflmao:

I'd sit on a 5 gallon bucket before I'd sit on one of those little tripod toy chairs. Surely there are good portable 3 leg chairs out there, but I've never seen one.

For simplicity, a 5 gallon bucket is the bare minimum. You may as well stand or kneel with anything less.  For good comfort but also being easy to lean forward or swivel around, the "director" style chair. I have the Trophy Angler brand one. The downwide to these is they take up a bunch of room. They are thin, so they stack in a sled nice when you get to the lake, but they never seem to stack in good when going home. For ultimate comfort you want full back support, plus nothing to dig into your legs. A "carp fishing" style chair is the best I've found. Mine looks just like the one in the link below. I use mine for hunting, which I prefer no arm rests. You can get them with arm rests too. They are big and bulky, and probably overkill for ice fishing, but you can also lay back and take a nap in them. I've yet to find anything that is super portable and also more comfortable than a 5 gallon bucket. Currently the best I've come up with is a simple bracket I've made to span the width of my Jet Sed, which I will mount a swivel and boat seat to. It is tall enough that no room is taken up inside the sled, and also offers good comfort. If you like to bring your sled inside your shack, it might be an option.

My pack opens into a chair. Its 30+ yrs. old now. Got crushed by a big boy, been repaired. Holds everything. Still works for run and drill.

My sister bought me one of those backpack/chair/coolers. I didn't think I'd use it but it turns out to be great.
Perfect for when I just want to throw it on my back and walk (10 min.) to the lake with a drill in one hand and a beer in the other.
It holds my skimmer, a couple rods, plenty of tackle, and more beers than you'd want to carry in a backpack.
And it's a chair! Not a great one. But it's a very handy package overall. Especially for it's size.
