Never even seen one in person. I’d live to!

Never seen a walleye?

I've never seen a lake trout, so I suppose 🤔 ;D

Nope! I wish!

You can keep those fight like a boot mud sharks. Taste like sssss and fight like a newborn. And I’ve caught 20+ lbers in the Great Lakes.

I think most fish taste like rancid stankhole, I just like catching them.  ;D

I mostly fish carp and redhorse from the boat, but I pick up a decent sized eye once in a while as bycatch.

Most of the water around here hits 85-90° in the summer, so not many trout cruising around. The DNR cut back the walleye stocking to throw a bunch of dink 8" rainbows in the river every spring to die by July, though. Gotta sell those trout stamps somehow  ::)

85-90? That must stink litterally lol I thought it was warm when the river at my house hit 70 once lol

They're a family of suckers. Some of the larger species get up to 15-20#. I've never gotten one that big, but I catch a few in the 5-8# range every year.

Catch a lot of shortheads. They run 1-2# on average. My goal in life has been to top the shorthead redhorse IL state record (3#12oz) the past few years. I've come within 4-6 ounces a couple times now.

Shorthead redhorse that was 3#6oz last summer.

Small ones make good catfish bait. They're really hard to keep alive very long, though; tend to die on the hook pretty fast.

Yeah Covid has essentially crushed all my hopes and dreams of doing anything besides working lol. I thought the “ pandemic” was going to put me out of work and instead it quadrupled it.

Walleye are tough to catch in the river through the ice. You need to find setbacks where the ice is safe the river with the current is too dangerous. The ice can change from a foot to 2" in a matter of feet and if you fall in the current will take you away. The setbacks I know are tough to get to very steep banks. Dark days like yesterday are the best or plan on staying a few hours after sunset. Unfortunately my days are over for getting up and down those steep banks... I've fished a few of the Vermont lakes that are stocked with walleye in the past on Vermont Free Fishing Day.

Oops well you got the low down for ice fishing... I would be up for it although it can be tough if we have a heavy snowmelt and high water conditions.

Most pressure came from Trout unlimited!!!  They were adamant that walleye would eat all of the native trout???   Those are very rare.   Trout and walleye wou!d coexist just as they have in Canada. We missed a chance to create a world class fishery.

Totally agree with Dick!

I heard there was some confirmed trout reproduction in the adjacent tribs (VT side?) that got the trout purists squawking.  Dunno for sure, could be fake news.

I have no doubt there was, it’s a lost cause in my opinion whether a walleye ate one or not. What do I know though, bios only ask me info non stop while I fish to create there own reports.

C'mon Denny - you don't give your guiding skills enough credit...  Got to at least try this spring... we'll find a time.

As a trout guy, I’d love to see Walleye In there and would travel to fish them.

As a panfish guy... Totally agree. Would love to see a sustainable walleye fishery in state, even if it's a bit of a haul to get to.
