Hummingbird ice helix 5
« on: Jan 27, 2022, 06:05 PM »
Hope everyone’s season has been good so far this year! was wondering what you guys think of the hummingbird ice helix 5 I’ve had my eye on one for a while now. I like it because it also has a mounting option for open water which I like. I mostly fish for rainbows/Brookies and do a good amount of laker fishing as well. Do you think the transducer spooks rainbows and brookies when fishing 3-4 feet below the ice or in shallower water?

I have one, sweet machine.

Never tried it that shallow I just see no advantage in those depths. The click is pretty loud and I’m sure there lateral line knows it’s there.

I really like mine, although it has taken me a couple seasons to really play with it to find what works best for me.

To answer your question, I think it does well in 3-4 feet of water.  Waaay better than my vexilar FL8 that I used to use. I have been fishing a lot in 6 feet or less this year because we've had a couple of wicked drought years.

Another nod for the Helix 5 - love mine.  Can't find an ice-ducer right now, so I have the transom ducer mouned on the bottom of tip up sticks.  Because of this - it is my shanty electronics only.  Use the Marcum M5 for most hole hopping excursions.

Added the Lakemaster chip this year - gonna mount the unit to my ATV eventually.

Love my helix 5. I like the split graph with the bottom zoom. If you're fishing shallow you won't really need the flasher just look down your hole.....

When or if my HB 598 lets out the magic smoke I'll be going Helix as well. Tough to find right now though, even Hodges Marine is showing them on backorder and they usually have everything fishing electronic and the best prices.

I ran my vex into the ground and I got every penny out of it and then some. Absolutely zero complaints. This Ice Helix is just out of this world though. If there was a hole in it, it would litterally be able to... well never mind.

Good point😂 I do a lot of night fishing (like tonight) and hard to see down the hole sometimes. Thank you everyone for the good info👍🏻
