Leader
« on: Dec 11, 2021, 04:42 AM »
For my non pike rods I was wondering what size leader to use
Rods and reels are
Ugly stik gx2 lite
Ugly stik gx2 medium
Pflueger trion 20 for both
For a mainline I’m going with 10lb power pro

Personally was thinking 6lb on the lite and 8lb on the medium action but wondered what you guys thought

I always look at actual line diameter and if it's more of an actual test# strength, I go with Stroft GTM line.

Stroft GTM 5X 5.28# test .15 mm line break 5# 10 oz.
Stroft GTM 4X 7.9# test .18 mm knot break 7# 2 oz.
Stroft GTM 3X 9# test .20 mm knot break 9# 6 oz.
Stroft GTM 2X 11.2# test .22 mm line break 10# 4 oz.

Compared to one of my favorite lines:
Pline Floroclear .16 mm 3# line break 4# 1 oz. (2012 palomar knot 4# 4)
Pline Floroclear .18 mm 4# line break 5# 14 oz. (2012 palomar knot 6#1)
Pline Floroclear .23 mm 6# line break 8# 11 oz. (2012 palomar knot 8#1)
Pline Floroclear .25 mm 8# line break 10# 9 oz. (2012 palomar knot 10#1)

******
Different lines exhibit slightly different properties for what one really wants.  Stroft GTM is a little more stiff compared to Pline Floroclear.  Also a super pain to tie an FG knot to that Stroft GTM 5x and much easier to tie it to Stroft GTM 2x.

What approximate size diameters would you use for each set up

In case you want to change out to a lighter or heavier lb fluoro
I was using a 10lb mainline and so if I end up breaking off a fish it will be at the leader so it isn’t as much line, stretch, sensitivity

The majority of panfishing I do, the line diameter I'm looking at is typically under .20 mm.  That is a typical 4# test mono like Trilene XL or Stren.  That also puts Stroft GTM at a break of 9#'s.

Depending on the size , 1 lake I use 4#fire , with a 6# leader for eyes reaching up to mid 20s , for big eyes mid 20s-30”+ 6#fire line with 10#leader or 10# power pro green with 10-12# leader all sets get a barrel swivel do to line twist from horizontal jigs
 Al inside a flip over

For walleyes, yeah depends on size or length of fish.  Typically I run only into fish under 17 inches so the 4# or .20 mm line diameter works just fine.  If patient and all, I've caught catfish up to 32 inches in length on that set up.  However I'm using bait casting reel set ups so the drag can be set changed efficiently to less or more without line breaking.

If I were to be hitting larger fish I would step up to 6# or .25 mm line diameter or more.  That is knowing that I'm catching walleyes 17 inches in length or larger.  Larger diameter lines, if the fish are a lot more active.  I've used like 14# or about .35 mm line diameter and still catch my panfish just fine.  However at this point it's more of lure control.  The larger more stiff lines prevents lures from being to erratic and knotting the leader line.  In addition also for fish control at the ice hole.  Larger stiffer lines also means reduce chance of fish entangling the line at the ice hole.  Sometimes I don't grab the fish and just yank'm out of the hole by grabbing the leader line.  Rare occasions where I just had the bend of the hook just on the fang of that walleye.  So darn lucky the fish didn't just open it's mouth and do a little head shake.  And pure luck that ice was just only about 6 inches thick.

4lb Segaru Tatsu for panfish, I run braid to leader.
I usually use about a 6 foot leader.

Bass and almost everything else I will use 6lb Seaguar Tatsu.
WINTER IS COMING!

What is your opinion of Berkeley vanish
Also could try seaguar new basix
Also would 8lb power pro be to heavy for a mainline for panfish because that’s as light as it goes
Edit I stand corrected lightest is 5lb

10# for bass n eyes. 2-4# for gill n crapy.  barring any cover to wrap on.  if you do your job even the lightest line will work. all my schoolies have tweaked drags on them for when the bigguns chomp your gill jig.   ;D

Also fg knot is to much of a pain I use a modified Alberto knot

It’s way easier to tie and holds up just as well
