L/UL: TUCR, TB, JT?
« on: Feb 14, 2021, 02:38 PM »
I am looking for a UL/L rod for fishing very light tungstens (3-4MM) up to tiny forage minnows.  I have the L/ML combos i like, but looking for that next size down.  Any thoughts on the 24 inch JT panhandler?  I like the built in slip bobber and how its seamless.  Tucr, TB???

Go with 13 fishing UL rods. No spring tip bobber needed. I have 2 27inch ul widowmakers love them. Also have a snitch with quick tip 29 inches. Both are 13 fishing.

Go carbon, i prefer them much more than glass noodle rods.. ESPECIALLY for spoons

Precision noodle or a Gloomis 330xf

The 330xf is the most sensitive ice rod I have ever used, I can feel and see the bite.

A 13 Fishing Wicked UL is just a hair tip softer than a St. Croix Mojo Ice UL.

For 3mm, 4mm jigs and spoons smaller than 1/16oz my preference is a glass rod over carbon (even with spring bobber). I would go for the TUCR Precision Noodle or the DH Customs AL Dente. I know DH Customs makes another version of the glass rod with a nitol spring bobber on it, think its called the Pannie Dropper, but I havent tried that one yet

for the carbon versus glass rod discussion, I think you have to decide if you prefer feeling the bite rather seeing the bite (granted if the fish hits hard enough you will feel it on both, just thinking about the very light bite or the "up bite")

I've got a 30" TUCR Precision Noodle and in my opinion it is not soft enough for 3mm and barely a 4mm. I've installed a spring bobber on mine to be able to see the "up bites".

The only rod I've used to this point that work for 3mm or 4mm well enough not to use a spring bobber is the 23" SUL Ticklestick. It loads up nicely enough to see those tough Pan Fish bites.

If you like spring bobbers take a look at the St Croix legend black, they are IMO the best spring bobbers out there..

The St. Croix Black is an interesting option.  Less cost than some of the others I mentioned, for a rod I'd use about 20% of the time I ice fish (I only fish for smaller pannies 1-2 a year)...  any feedback on this rod?  24 Light or UL:?

I almost exclusively run 3-4mm jigs while panfishing and between the ticklesticks, tuc precision noodle, and jt panhandler I always find myself gravitating to the jt panhandler.  The spring bobber tip in my opinion is the best I've yet to use when it comes to detecting those super lite bites.

I rather use the 24" St. Croix Mojo Ice UL over the 24" St. Croix Legend UL which is really 21" plus spring bobber.  That's just my preference.

Slippery Bob, I'm seeing the 24 inch Legend Black at a total length of 25.5 in specs...  that right?

It's possible that St. Croix has finally changed it.  Their Legend Ice rods all use to be nearly three inches short, because they use to count the spring bobber as part of the total length.

Ordered a 30 inch JT Panhandler with spring bobber, putting a sienna 500 on it with seagur Ice X 2lb flouro.  I'll hold off and see about adding a 32 inch TUCR fusion to the lineup prior to year's end.
