Great day on ice with great friends
« on: Feb 21, 2021, 05:15 AM »
Saturday morning we packed up the gear and hit the ice for a trout day. We were on the ice and set up by 630am. First flag was on a shiner set 3 feet down in 40 feet of water which ended up being my buddies first trout through the ice. After that first flag the trout just kept coming!! We ended the day with 20 trout caught on tip ups and the jig sticks, with the largest being 18 1/4 and the smallest 15.  My buddy my girlfriend and icedogjims wife all got their first trout through the ice. My son got a real nice 18 1/4 rainbow on the jig stick in 30 feet of water right on the bottom, while trying to jig up some smallies. All the fish on tipups came out of 4 feet to 40 feet of water, 18 inches to 4 feet under the ice on shiners or night crawlers. Jigging was a different story, fish came from anywhere in the water column in the 20 to 40 foot depths, on larger presentation jigs like buckshot spoons, they wanted nothing to do with smaller profile jigs like tungstens. All in all it was a awesome day with some great friends!!

What system are you using.  I have heard of secret sauce?  Do you have this sauce?  Perhaps you can share some with me.  Are you a guide or perhaps give free advice I can later take credit for?

Slayem em again. Tight lines!

Looks like a great day. I'm ready to share my system. Drill a hole. Put a shiner on the hook. Drop in in the hole. Sit down. Crack a pbr. It's worked for years

As my wife says. "Fishing is a jerk on one end of the line waiting for a jerk on the other

Nice fish! Love it when the trout bite like that.

Sounds like a great day. Cool to hear about all the  action at the top of the water column.

That's always the way I target rainbows on the tipups. Hasn't failed me yet!! 😁😁

Just a suggestion for the future, if targeting trout. Try a small hook (#8-10) with several spikes under tipups. It surprised me that it worked when I first tried it, but it does tend to pick some up when they're finicky.

I do that sometimes and I also like to use mealworms. In some ponds and lakes they will take the mealie over anything
