Any wheelhouse owners?
« on: Feb 05, 2009, 09:58 AM »
Just curious, what I see on this forum are about 90% portable owners.  Am I just making the wrong assumption or are there more permanent shanty owners on this site than 10% of you?  Curious to find out if anyone on this site own a wheelhouse?  Do you like it?  How much Ice do you need to feel comfortable pulling it out on and what do you do to get off the ice when the bottom freezes solid to the ice?

i built one 6 1/2 ft wide by 10 ft long, have had it a couple years. If you can drive a truck on the lake, the wheelhouse will be ok. Mine has a 4" steel square tubing frame with 4" steel I beams across the middle. The back is designed to open to allow for a 4 wheeler, but it is actually a little heavy for a 4 wheeler to move around. To keep it from freezing to the ice you lay down 2 x 4's at the corners and tongue.

I have a 6 1/2' x 12' wheel house and a portable. If there isn't too much snow on the ice I can pull my wheelhouse with my ATV. For the last few years we have had too much snow on the lakes. When we get these conditions, I pull it with my pickup. I usually have my portable in my pickup and can pull it all over the lake and stay in the wheelhouse at night.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.
