So, would it be a good idea when you are done fishing, to move the button to near your hook to prevent this?  And be all set next time out?

So, I have thought of that, but 1, I don't always know the depth I will need them at on my next trip' again waisted time moving them down just to move them back... 2 it is often dark, with a big temp drop and I don't have a 3rd hand to "slide the button on the freezing line, as I reel in the line. With the clip I lift the tilt out of the hole, take the clip off the line, up it in my mouth, reel in the line, and clip it to the swivel at the end of the running line, and best of all my hands did not get wet moving a button up and down a freezing line... But that is just me, use what works for you...

I have used small split shots for many years. Usually keep near the leader when putting away.  Remove when sounding the depth. Apply after sounder hits the bottom.  Easy to see in the hole and reset the trap. Also have extra split shot in pocket if one is missing or want to change depth but also keep bottom marked. Tight lines

Really depends on where you're fishing. If I'm marking my line depth at all I use a slip knot because one day I might be in 10 feet, the next could be 60 ft down over 100 FOW, so sliding buttons around is a no-go on my end. I can also measure out 5 feet of line pretty reliably just pulling it off the spool, and I honestly don't care if I'm 12" or 3 feet off the bottom. Plus if there's weeds I'd rather have by bait above them anyway, so I use my sonar to set my traps a lot of the time too. Regardless, I won't use anything that can't be removed from the line quickly, or anything that will get snagged in weeds or on the edge of the ice. I've used really small split shots too with pretty good results. IMO that's the best option if you really want something semi-permanent attached to your line.

Lot of different options, what will work best for you depends on where you're fishing!

shallow I just guess at it.  moist times, deeper than 20', I want it near bottom so no need for marker there either.
real fishermen don't ask "where you catch those"

Small buttons 100%
The easiest solution IMO

Tiny bobbers hooked to the line with the top and bottom of the bobber.
