Wood stove in a hub shelter
« on: Nov 29, 2020, 05:30 AM »
Yes, it is that time of year! Looking for opinions on a small , potentially titanium backpacking wood stove for my shelter. I’ve got one of the 11’ diameter insulated octagons which I did a couple single nights in last year with a buddy heater. Foam puzzle floor and leaving the heater off at night. Worked awesome and very happy, with the exception of the moisture. They say wood heat is dryer, though with a puddle of a floor I am wondering how much of a difference it actually makes. I want to keep relatively mobile (not moving much but not building a plywood floor) and realize that a pack stove and wood is already adding weight and it doesn’t get much easier than turning the valve of a propane heater...
How nice would a toasty wood stove be though!?

I had the Shappell 6500 and a Buddy heater portable and was too hot most of the time. You would cook inside with a wood stove.

I've watched a couple of youtube  videos of people winter camping in an insulated hub with a wood stove and it seemed to work great.  No one ever mentioned condensation.
You can observe alot by watching.

Well, I just watched this one. Seems like an awful lot of work and hassle for a portable shack. Unless you plan on keeping it out there as a permy. The guy also said he felt he was getting CO from his sunflower. You should be opening doors and windows on occasion with ANY heat source. Keep mine cracked always. Common sense.

Exactly...and you haven't even hauled the wood yet.

Possibly if you set it up for a few weeks or so, but think of how much wood you would need.

Works great, you can dampen the fire down so its not cooking you out. This isn't meant for run and gun fishing, this is more for base camping or if you can set up on structure.

Put a piece of sheet metal about 3-4 inches below the bottom off the stove, it will reflect the heat back up and keep from making a lake in the hut. Even a big cookie sheet hanging under there will do.

Yeah I hear ya, extra effort for sure but for the overnights it would be nice to have the option to get the shack cooking and dry some gear out. I typically prefer fishing outside and running around during the day.

I have one of the double hub Eskimo shelters and I have a wood stove that I use in it. I like the wood heat and it doesn't take a lot of wood, I did learn that presto logs are a big no go as they crumble a bit and then flame up like crazy, more than the stove pipe could handle and I got smoked out of the shelter for quite a while.

Wood sure smelled good in the old houses and it was comfortable heat, but I don’t miss the sweat-freeze-sweat-freeze that came with it. Buddy heaters are just too easy not to use them.

I will be doing the same thing. I think the number one argument against this I see from most people is the lack of mobility. When I set up the hub it is considered "base camp". This is where we will go for a meal and to sleep. Otherwise we are mobile with our one mans as we venture away from base camp. As for doing this successfully I think I will be getting a 45 degree attachment and going out window so I do not have to cut into hub. I plan on putting a welding blanket down under stove and against hub for extra precaution. We have a wood stove in the house and without a doubt it is the family's favorite place to gather and relax. I think it will be neat to gather and relax around one in hub while playing some cards at night and enjoying some cold ones before bed.
