The guy who runs the launch at my local lake has a permanent shanty on the N end.
He's not able to drag around his gear because of an injury, so a group of us help him get it out there. He does really well.

We get shanty towns out on the big lakes, they look like villages. They have roads to them and everything.

Problem one is in my state (PA) we are not allowed atv's or vehicles on the ice.  Problem two the ice would probably never stay thick enough or long enough to justify a bigger fish house.   :-\
Bring on the ice!!!!!!!  <br />

Lake Champlain has numerous wooden shanties mostly because they can be somewhat permanent for extended periods of time on most years. It is kind of like coming home to drive up to a shanty, open the padlock and enter a familiar domain with all the basics ready to go.  Each shanty is somewhat different and its occupants and owners are easily identifiable from year to year.

In my area of Ontario and north I would say wooden shanties are more the norm with very few portables seen on occassion . Either that or we fish in the open but I will be putting my new Otter to use this year . ;)

The greatest compliment a died in the wool old time Mainer ever paid to me
was to mistake me for a local.

At what point does someone from-away attain acceptance? lose their flat-lander
status?
Alas I can tell ya  never happens trust me if the birth certificate doesnt say maine  never happen   lol been here greater than 30 years Im still from away!  even if you were born outa state and moved back in next day  your from away  lol

Specialized tools.....hard side, portable.....hand auger, gas auger, light jig rod, one with a bit more backbone.....one man portable, two man portable, 6'x8' hardside.  It all depends on who's with you, where you're at, how hard the winds blowing, how thick the ice is, how much beer you are drinking, how seriously you're fishing.
