Pontoosuc trout?
« on: Feb 26, 2020, 10:35 AM »
I know this is a big pike fishery, so most people are targeting those, but has anyone had any luck ice fishing trout in Pontoosuc? Or Onota for that matter. Are they up shallow? Thanks to anyone willing to share. ;D

In northern Berkshire County, your best bets for ice fishing for trout would be Fish Pond (a/k/a Windsor Lake) in North Adams (which generally has 12" to 14" rainbows) and North Pond in Savoy (which generally has 10" to 12" brookies and browns).

Great thanks! I've been doing pretty well at Duke's, with slightly better size than I get at North Pond. I was hoping to have luck on the big ponds, but may just stick to the small ones.

Stockbridge Bowl usually is a good trout pond for me. Mostly browns during ice season.

Yup. Came out of the hole looking like that. Lots of Berkshire lakes have both so the pike eat the trout. That one was cool cause it was almost 16" and the wound was fresh.

The pike have come accustomed to the spring stocking of trout at onota and pontoosuc and move in close to stocking sites every year. Lol I am that guy throwing the 12 inch swim bait while people are power baiting and throwing Spinners, they think I’m nuts till I hook up. Every year get one during that time no giants but 10lbers and or around size are common.
Drill um and fill um........

Should be a legal bait.  95% of trout are stocked so its essentially just a big shiner raised in a pen.  If you can keep X amount to eat I don't see why you can't jig one up, and send it back down as bait on a trap.

They work but are no silver bullet thats for sure.  Took me a long time to get a monster to eat one.

I think it’s probably so you don’t use native brookies.

They are considered a gamefish, you cant use gamefish for bait
