Planning on bringing my son up next weekend.  What’s the best way to try for trout?  Clear leader small hooks but what kind of bait?  In Mass I usually use mealworms or real small shiners.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Smelts are best but shiners work too.

It's been very slow trout fishing (at least for me) the past couple years out on Cobbossee.... I've always had good luck with smelts, when the fishing was better.

I have caught a lot of fish with mealworms. They aren't my first choice of bait but they are the most readily available insect larva. If I have the option I prefer to use spikes or waxworms as panfish bait. I have found a mealworm on a #8 Forage Minnow is very effective on smallmouth bass.

Pretty sure pike would love eating 11" tank scrubber browns, its only a matter of time before that lake is useless

Plenty of places where trout n pike coexist.

I've owned land on cobbsee in Litchfield for 30 years and I've watched the large and smallmouth population not change much. Always have and always will be some big big bass. I have noticed a huge change in the pike population and the trout populations have gone way down hill. But there are still some monster trout to be had.

For me I have been there 4 times already this year and fishing was slow. Out of all 4 outings I picked up one brown on a medium shinner jigging with a small gold Swedish pimple close to the bottom in 15 feet of water. Mostly picked up some decent large mouth and a couple of pretty good Pike. But in general it has been slow. I wish you luck

Took a ride around Cobbossee the other day on my sled and checked in with three groups - two got some nice browns (up to 18') and the third group got crappie/perch and one pike... the pike (a VERY large one) had three small crappie in its belly... do the math
