  Neal,
I've never used one myself but last year several guys here were using 1/2 h.p. battery powered drills that had an attachment for an auger and they claim that they can get 30-35 holes  on one charge. They seemed to work very well and are sure a lot lighter to haul that my gas powered auger.

I got tired hauling the generator after a while and those dam snowmobiles kept running over the extension cords. On E-bay, you can buy an adapter for a cordless drill that swings a counter balance. The old Makita cordless drill with the long batteries could be replaced with dowels that had conductors on the ends and hooked to a twelve volt battery. They use this kind of rig in boatyards and they can drill for a long time before recharging.

Allot of guys around here use the "Jiffy Lectric" ice auger to open the holes inside their permanent houses. No smoke, no stink, no noise make these augers perfect for this purpose. The only downside is having to drag a battery around if none is available. These augers work great, and they are priced about the same as their lighter gas powered models.

I have never used one myself. Only because we are limited to foot travel on the ice here in PA, and the weight of a battery kills the main reason for owning one.
But I will say that I have only heard good things about them...........
80% of Americans are unhappy with the direction our once great Country is heading. Yet 80% of Americans insist on buying blue jeans that were made in China, coffee filters that were made in Taiwan and anything else that was made anywhere but here........wonder if there might be a connection?

Before you do, you should be careful of how much amperage your auger will draw versus how many amps your ATV will produce. Many motorcycles and ATVs do not have alternators equipped to handle a large amp draw for things such as auxilliary lighting, or electric vests or heated handgrips. Also, the battery in your ATV is not suited for a huge current discharge. If you draw it down too much, you will dramatically shorten the life of it (the battery).

Good point Higgy. I used a 1,000,000 CP Spotlight last winter on my atv and the battery didn't last as long as I thought it should have.

I used a rechargeable auger last year a few times. I don't remember the brand, but I liked it a lot! I really can't stand gas ones.

Google "Ice auger portable drill adapters" and see how you can adapt your battery powered drill motors to use with your auger.

Guys at one of our lakes used these last winter and they worked great.

also they are great on lakes where no gas engines are allowed, not many DEC officers mess with you when you have a gas auger because most people assume no gas engines refers to no gas motors on boats, but if they wanted to be arses they could nail you for a gas auger

it might not even power it at all. my buddie bought an adapter so he could plug his corded skil saw into his polaris sportsmen. and it didnt even power it. i'd find somebody who has tried it before i bought one and counted on doing that.
